So can someone explain to me the derby down there? This whole buying a boat thing? the AI should be here in about 2 weeks and unsure if I'll have it up and rolling by then but if I did, I might be interested in joining in...

I'm not sure it's 100% correct but I believe this is how it goes.  The entry fee is $20. Then on Friday night they auction off each boat in the derby. The kayaks sold for $125 to $150 last year. The big charters fetch $350 to over $500.

The money goes into the pot and I think 25% goes to the charity (sportsmanship association I think). 25% goes to the single big fish by weight. 50% goes to whoever bought the boat with the winning fish at the auction. I can't remember but I think the total "pot" was something over $6,000.

The 25% to charity goes to the Boys Club for their activities throughout the year. It's their major fund raiser for the year.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Ok. Here's some motivation.

First king ever landed in the derby. It was last year in the 17th year. To top it off, it was her first sport caught king ever and she's been in Alaska since I met her in kindergarten. Lol.

Video is a tad long but it captures most of the battle. Number one lesson to be learned that day for me is you have to net your own fish!

That was fun to watch. I like your attitude, "if we get it we get it, if we don't we don't". IMO the thrill of not knowing how it will all turn out is what makes fishing fun :)

I was laughing so hard at Rudy netting his VisiPole and rod multiple times that the whole shop came over to watch.

Great job on landing that king Rudy and Greta! And many thanks for sharing the vid. I especially liked the running commentary.

Just discovered this site and am very excited to see some action:)

I plan to bring my younger cousin out this weekend (5/19) on the yaks. I look forward to seeing some other yak fishers on the water. After 2 years (15+ trips) I've only run into two other yak fisherman.

Should be a great time and I wish you guys the best of luck out there!

My weekend plans begin Thursday where my cousin and I will head to Whiskey Gulch area then find a good area to camp out. Friday we plan to test the waters lightly and see what kind of luck we will have then decide what to do from there. It will be our first trip out for the year. Anyone else going to be in this area? We would love to meet up with some other takers while were out on the water. I will be in a 15ft yellow OK and his will be orange :D If you see us stop by and say hi :D

How far south of Deep Creek is the Whiskey Gulch turnout?  I'll be headed that way Friday evening, but it'll probably be late.

Any particular launch times for Saturday morning?

I'd say about 10 miles? There's a brown sign pointing to the turnout.
