Ok, I give it better than 50% odds I'm going to make a Run to Homer Sat and maybe Sun.

Here's what I'm looking at:

Marine weather. Variable winds 10kts seas 3ft. Totally doable especially close to the spit.
http://pafc.arh.noaa.gov/marfcst.php?fcst=FZAK51PAFC#PKZ125

Weather
High 36deg 30% chance of rain.
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:99603.1.99999

Driving conditions look ok with what appears to be dry roads
http://m.511.alaska.gov/alaska511Mobile/routeSummary/index?highwayName=Seward+Highway

http://m.511.alaska.gov/alaska511Mobile/routeSummary/index?highwayName=Sterling+Highway

I plan to use a downrigger flasher and small herring. Likely will be working 60 to 100 ft of water starting about two thirds of the way down. Adjust as I mark fish and or bait. Given the temps, no hurry to get out.

Plan to spend all my time trolling for kings. Hope to pick up a lucky chicken butt and if I have time and remember to bring the right gear, maybe try to catch a flounder or two.

Plan to launch just north of the condos.

Will update as new information comes in.

Conditions deteriorating. Argh

Now Sw15 seas 4ft on Saturday.   Still doable but trends is not good and wind chill becomes a factor.

It got a little better. Final call at 4am. Bait and gear ready. Going to prep kayak this evening.

At this point it is STILL A GO!  Lol.

As always my biggest concern is still the drive down

Watch out for moose... and ice.  Not much different than November and December on that score!  Hope it all holds together for you and you can make an affirmative call in the morning.  Stay safe.

Add your moose and it's getting as risky as skydiving...without a parachute!  The on water stuff is easy!!!

5:30am...snowing in Anchorage.  Hmm....

Homer forecast calling for snow and rain.  10 knts increasing to 15 knts in the afternoon. Sunday looks better.

So its a go for at least an attempt.  Hope to stay at the parents place in Kenai this evening and try it again Sunday as well.

A little nervous to drive so far for my first trip of 2012.  Had to replace a flush mount rod holder last minute yesterday.  Who knows what else I will forget or will not be working.  Gotta try and get started sometime!!

I bought a lifeproof waterproof case for the iphone so hopefully I can update if I get on the water.

LET THE SEASON BEGIN!

I am OUT of SHAPE!!!!!!  A bit windy and massive tides make it tough to make headway north. Ya fly going south. Marking fish in 100 to 120 ft of water but nothing so far. It seemed so easy last year!  Haha.

Shore break after 2.5 hours. Hit it again in a few.

Here's a few pics. This was after it calmed down enough to take my phone out of my pocket. Big tides and wind made for some tough fishing. Saw fish but no strikes. The fish I marked we're 100ft down in 120ft of water. PITA to get to.

It was good to get out though. Everything seemed so much easier last year. Launching, using the downrigger, peddling, loading the yak.

I was so tired after 4 hours of fishing I dropped my kayak twice loading it and both times I didn't even try to catch it. I was just dead on my feet. Not good for my yak or the paint job on my car!

Just got to get back into the groove.

Yeah that shot of your yak on the beach makes it look not friendly out there. Especially with your net flying like that! Well Im jealous still anyway!

Much better weather today!!! But can't buy a hit. Not even from an Irish lord. No bait no nothing on sonar. At least I marked fish yesterday!  Can't beat the weather though!!!

Yep, conditions have much improved in 24 hours.  Gorgeous day all around, and the forecast for the coming week looks wonderful.  I'll bet you felt like you were in much better shape today, not having to contend with the wind on top of the current.

Next week, there will be fish!  And then, the week after that...
