Is there a thread or video on proper surf launching/landing?

stumbled onto this guy wearing it out on youtube

That's how its done! :headbang:
Great  bracing demo and note how he leaned into the wave and slid in sideways when he broached.

Nice video! Is it just me or does it look the the sit insides may be at an advantage in the surf zone because of the low center of gravity, and the ability to steer by twisting their torso? I guess the narrower beam kind of balances the scale!

Awesome!! Pure adrenaline rush. I wonder if our sit on tops would handle the same during the bracing part. Thanks for a great post.

Lower CG and the ability to use your knees inside the hull make it waaay easier to control a sit-inside and stay on (in the boat).
Sitting on top of a barrel (like sitting on an SOT) is a whole lot less stable than sitting inside on the bottom (like sitting in a sit inside). Thigh straps would also do wonders for an SOT.
My first Cobra kayak actually came with thigh straps, but I never got around to using them.  I never could figure out why it had two shoulder straps. ::)

Thats awesome! I saw a special on Oregon Field guide a few years ago of guys doing that. That looks like a lot of fun. Pretty hard to do in a SOT though I would imagine. Thanks for the video post Fishesfromtupperware.

I have a few instructional videos for kayak surfing and I think the one that is the most applicable for the angler crowd is called "In the surf" http://www.performancevideo.com/in_the_surf_performance_surf_kayaking
Covers tactics from charging through surf to getting back in safely.
I also find it inspires me to get out there and play without the fishing gear.
Performance video also has some river safety vids that I found a lot of value in.

Surfing on SOTs is common practice all over the world

Wow...great video. Dude's got it going on and appears to have his sets and bracing down. I can do all of that in my OK Trident T-11 too, but prefer to be ten to twenty yards from my upside down kayak, flailing my arms and pretending like I'm drowning.

The only way to pull this off on an SOT is with some thigh straps.

They make a huge difference in your ability to control the kayak.  Without them, you're pretty much just along for the ride.

Has anyone tried using the thigh straps for surf landings?

I have thigh straps I had intended to put on my wooden SOT just for such a thing.  The hull design was made so it could surf a little better than my Outback. It is narrower with a little more rocker.  I may put them on the Outback or the Adventure just to try surfing them.  This video has really got me motivated to do so.
