Going to be up in the Tacoma area this weekend, was thinking I may lug the yak up with me if there's been any action up in the area.  Anybody been getting into anything (note: I should probably check the regs to see what's open as well  )

In the salt, the only thing really open is greenling, flounder, and sole.  Depending on the area, resident blackmouth is open (good luck with those!)

If you're fishing freshwater, check http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports_plants.html for recent planting reports.

Bumping this up as may roll up to the area for the weekend (also considering the Straits but that drive sound unattractive...).  I know the usual PB spot for lings is fishing Galloping Gertie's resting spot, but also know there is some structure out near Ruston (slagpile, Les Davis marine park).  Much luck out there for lings or mostly just underlings and other fish you can't keep?

Tacoma Narrows (galloping gertie area) should have lings, but you better be ready for the currents, they get over 6 mph this weekend.

Ruston... yeah that's a pretty nasty looking area, I don't think I'd keep any bottomfish from that area.  Catch and Release could be fun there.  There are multiple sunken structures and artificial reefs there.  Divers like the area.  I'm sure there are fish, I've just never fished it because it just seems like a highly polluted spot to me.

NWnoob and myself will be targetting flounder at Chamber's Bay Sun morn. Southsound ling fishing is pretty unproductive for the most part. I know a spot or two, but once spearfishing season opens it gets shot up in a hurry... :( I'd be happy to point you in the right direction. Shoot me a PM. I don't want to post it all over the webs. it's a fairly well known spot, but not that well  ;)

Yeah, don't want to deal with the Narrows area.  What about Ruston for crab (especially near the old Asarco area)?

ravdakot, have heard that area can be fun, will ping you if we end up rolling up.  Still trying to figure out the weekend.

Check the wdfw site for shellfish toxicity warnings for that area. Like Lee said, i wouldnt keep anything from the bottom there. ASARCO wasnt known for restraining their heavy metal pollutants .

Just went and re-read that area's history given all the red flags being raised.  All these years I thought they were saying Asarco was a superFUN site

To this day they play commercials on TV and you get stuff in the mail saying "don't let your kids play in the dirt" and "don't grow vegetables in the dirt" and stuff like that.  Pretty Cool.

ya know, all kidding and red flags aside, we have members who live on Vashon and the other islands in that area, plus people who live within the old pollutant down fall areas. Wonder what they have to say about it?

That's actually an interesting question that I'm hoping a few answer.  The reality of the Sound is it's flanked with high population areas where pollution control hasn't kept up with population growth and thus likely receives a lot of pollution via rivers, rain runoff, etc. and wonder if the Asarco area (immediate soils notwithstanding) are truly any worse than the rest of the Sound.  Also wonder if the Puyallup river's sediments make it as far as the Asarco area to have done a good job at covering the heavily polluted soils to where bottomfish and others aren't getting the full brunt that you'd expect?  Regardless, you've all scared me off and I'm going to socal to chase bluefins this weekend instead!

Actually, I think the US areas adjacent to Puget Sound have done a pretty good job of keeping Puget Sound clean and keeping toxic material out of the water.  I think we are probably close to if not at a sustainable situation, where the toxic load is either stable or decreasing.

Now, if we could only get Canada, particularly Victoria to stop dumping RAW SEWAGE into the strait/north sound.
