An astute reader may have noticed that in the pictures posted of me throughout this thread there was something vital missing on my yak that is common to most kayaks.  Any guesses?

I will try to post a video tomorrow of my surf landing without said item.   Pelagic noticed on the way out but thought it was intentional on my part.  I didn't even notice until hours later a short time before heading back to shore. Then the pucker factor kicked in.

Bwah-ha-ha-ha!!! This I gotta see!!  >:D

McGyver might of used his hawg trough. Or fashioned it from his turbo fins, line and a fishing rod. But you must have been intent on defining "Freestyle surf landing". Way to take it to the next level. I can't wait to see the video.

Craig, you could have just faked a Huli and swam it in.   ;D

Humm....maybe a peddler without a way to become a paddler if the need arose ?? :)
Bingo!

Sadly, it may disappoint you all. There was no huli except a teeny tiny one when I tried pulling the drive before the wave that was out to get me, got me.  It is kinda unnerving knowing that you do not have the option to brace if necessary.  I guess I could have McGyvered it with the Hawg Trough as DeaFish suggested, but I did not think of it.  I may try it once just for kicks and giggles. :)

Great report and pics Craig. My first whale was a PC during the 2008 ORC. It breached right behind me, swam under me, and surfaced off my bow. Very cool! I wish I lived closer to PC. The conditions are always so much better there then here. I see a camping trip to PC sometime in the near future!

Goldendog, thanks.  We need to head farther south to Depoe so we can hook up with you.

Here is my instructional video on hands free surf landings. ;)

Since the camera is in a fixed position related to the boat, it is hard to see how close I was to getting rolled over.  I also had the thought, "Crap! Never get off the yak between the shore and the surf" go through my head but as I was reflexively doing just that.

Nice work Craig! Thanks for also getting a picture of the whale, that's a great shot. I got nothing on my videos and photos.

You guys missed out on the fun wednesday... started out great... then got real sporty... 6x6 from the S with a 20kt wind from the S... wwwweeeeeee!

only got to hang out for about an hour, but picked up a couple lings and some nice blacks before things got too serious.

I had thought about Wednesday, but chickened out.  I love the salt, particularly at PC.  I can't wait to get back out there.  I had never fished there before this year.  I didn't know what I was missing.

Wednesday's forecast had all the earmarks of crap ocean conditions.  Glad you were able to splash your yak for at least a little while.  Pics?
