I would like to use the Hobie twist n seal hatches on a non Hobie boat.
I think they will fit but I was hoping for some insight from a Hobie hatch user before I add to cart.
I plan on using both the 8"and 6" hatches.
Will they fit? any issues spotted?
Im also open to suggestions if someone thinks that there is a better product for this project.
Thanks

The O-rings on the Twist n Seal hatches can be a pain. Fine sand especially gets in the O-ring groove and can make it extremely difficult to close. However after taking Lees advice and using some silicone spray on the O-ring, the problem is solved.

I have the same issues micah lists, but a good hose-down and some silicon lubricant solves them.

Can't say I've ever had that much trouble with the twist n seal hatches. Are you washing your yak down after fishing?

I'm not really that religeous about washing my Hobie down after every trip, yet I haven't had any issues with my 8" twist and seal hatches.

Hope this image can give you some answers. This is an 8" hatch that sits just in front of the seat on the AI.

Thanks Zee
Thats exactly what I needed.
Its not a fit. I need 8" across and the 1"edge.
So glad I inquired here before I ordered.
Just trying to get away from any tupperware or screw top hatchware.
Thanks again

The WD40 Silicone Lubricant spray instantly solved it for me, even with a little sand still there.

Hydro, check the dimensions on these two deck plates.

Daytona Plastics Deck Plate Pull Out Style 8" Black

Cut-Out Dimensions: 8 1/4"

Daytona Plastics Deck Plate Pull Out Style 6" Black

Outside Dimensions: 8"
Inside Dimensions: 5 1/2"
Cut-Out Dimensions: 6 1/2"

I used the 6" hatch (deck plate) on my fiberglass rod pod lid.  Awesome unit, nice clean fit.
Note, you will want to leash the lid as it is not hinged.  The cool thing with this one, is that you can close it in any direction.  You can see a wide tab on the opposite side as the cam lock.

Thanks INSAYN,
Those are the outside dimensions I need.
I am disappointed that I wont be using the hinged Hobie hatch and the hatch buckets.
Im just not clear why they would market that hobie hatch at 8" but its mute at this point.
Thanks again gang!,for saving me some cash and frustration with that order.

Ill post complete documentation on this boat when its done.

Just trying to get away from any tupperware or screw top hatchware.

Hey! I resemble that remark!  >:(

Those nice  dogged hatches (twist and shout) are one of the main reasons I bought the Hobie and they work reeeally well for me. Your right to avoid screw-on's though. Sand is the hatch killer.

You might try Boater's World. Seems they had a pry-off deck plate or inspection plate the might fit your hole.

And tupperware does still work (if your desperate) ;D

Im just not clear why they would market that hobie hatch at 8" but its mute at this point.

The internal opening is really close to 8 inches, and it's designed for a larger mounting surface area.  That hatch hole you posted looks like it was designed for a rubber cover, like those found on the Wilderness System Tsunamis, and lacks a large support area like that needed for the hobie hatch.

Youre right Lee, it is tupperware style and its going back on for now(desperate).
A plan for a 2 day trip just came together and this is the boat I want to take.

I guess it does make sense that it takes extra room to house the hinges and cam.
There was just a massive loss of stoke when I realized it wouldnt work.

I do continue to have issues with my Hobie hatch o-rings even with WD-40.  I even found a source for BIG O-RINGS and bought a couple replacements, but the plastic is too stiff, and I bought o-rings of the same diameter as the Hobie stock are wide.  The hardness I got was BN-70 (BUNA-N Nitrile) 8"ID x 8-3/8"OD.   I believe the proper o-ring would be BN-50 and 8"x8-5/16".  Still looking.

Are you using regular WD 40, or "water resistant silicone lubricant" shown at the top right  http://www.wd40specialist.com/products

I also found that the original gasgets need to rotated back to the right position for smoothest functioning.
