So everyone has goals...right?  Well, I'm a goal oriented person that enjoys having fun in the outdoors (especially kayak fishing).  So, I thought I'd set some goals and possibly challenge anyone to join me in the fun.

What do I want?  I want to catch 1000 pounds of Halibut, 1000 inches of fish, and 1000 fish.....all out of my kayak.  Doable?  Yes, but how soon can it be done? I dunno.

So the count so far is:

Fish: 7
Pounds of Halibut: 12.5
Total Length: 124.25 inches

These goals are in addition to winning AOTY and KW....of course.

Enough typing.....Let's go out and play.

Are you only counting the fillet weight?  Because that hali looks like more than 12.5lbs.

Just going off of the live weight charts in the AK tide books....it was 30.25"

I'd rather underestimate than overestimate.

I don't know, Kenai_Guy. I think there's got to be some sort of handicapping within the field to even things out a bit for us old, married, urban Alaskans.  And what's the prize for the first to reach the three different thousand marks?  I'm sure I can get there before I'm 60...

For what it's worth:
Fish: 4
Pounds of Halibut: 79.9
Total Length: 118 inches

Good luck from Homer this weekend. I'm going to stay off the highways and do some work on the cabin instead.  I'm sure I'll wet a line somewhere, but I won't be adding to the saltwater totals.

We can make some members only jackets, and make patches for each level.

Or just brag at the campfire over some cake and scotch.

OMG I am so jealous of you all up there.  So wish I could even think about a goal like that....Hmm, with rockfish maybe, but to do it with 'buts would just be a kick.

Love the jacket idea :)  Maybe pins for each of the 3 "stages" or something like that would be cool.

Update after my Spit Rat excursion.....

Fish Count:  37
Pounds of halibut: 22.5
Total inches: 449.75

I'm still working on it....hopefully the butts will start their move in closer soon.  At least the big ones.  Still fun bending a rod!!!

Definitely can be done.  Number of fish?  Wait for the pinks to show this year or like you did, go to the spit and pull up all sorts of fish one after the other.

I think the thousand inch thing is going to be too easy for someone with your standards....go 10,000.  That's only a ten inch per fish average if you hit 1,000 fish.

My goals I think I listed last year were....

1) Land an octopus
2) 75 plus pound halibut
3) 50 plus pound King
4) Discover a new fishery (night fishing maybe...kinda tough during the Alaskan summers!).  I have a few in mind....

I think I caught (dipped) about 1500 inches worth of hooligan. Does that count? Well, I would have to sit in the yak from shore to do that. Oh well, went to 20 mile Monday night dipped for 4 and half hours with the wife and ended up with about 7 gallons of hooligan. Most in one dip was 6 lots of doulbes but mostly lots of empty dipping to just get one. Oh well, going to smoke some and the rest will be halibut and pike bait for the year.

Bait?  I thought you were supposed to dry them, stand them on their nose and light their tails in fire... >:D

Update.....

53 fish, 666.75 inches of fish, and 25.5 pounds of halibut.  Yes, for those of you doing the math.....I caught a 3 lb halibut, but it was with a barbie pole so that makes up for it right?

Update....

66 Fish
791 inches of fish
25.5 lbs of halibut

This sucks that the cook inlet was closed for a while.  Hopefully I'll get out sometime soon and chase more buts.  I've been chasing some tail lately, and its put a damper on the but chasing.  (does that make any sense?)

It's amazing how much backbone those barbie rods really have.

You've got a ways to go on the # of fish and lbs of hali.  I can't wait for your next update!

Latest update.......

96 fish
1084.75 inches of fish
still 25.5 lbs of halibut

Everything lately has been too small to turn in for tournament points.....dang it!

On a side note.... caught the biggest 6 fish stringer I've ever caught last night.  ~ 63 lbs of Red salmon in 6 fish.  Too bad it was from the bank

Good for you on the reds -- I didn't realize they'd doubled the limits. Makes sense.  I'll hold off on fishing for them in the river until numbers show in the Upper Kenai.  There, I'm crazy for floating in my IK from one bend and gravel bar to the next -- fly rod at the ready.
