I'm heading out this morning to buy a VHF two way radio. Any suggestions? I would like to keep it under $100 dollars if possible? Any extras out there? I would rather give you guys the money if possible.

Under $100 you won't get GPS and DSC capabilities.  Step that up to $150-200 and you can get that in a Lowrance LHR-80 or Standard Horizon HX-851.  IMHO it's worth that extra money for the safety of DSC mayday calls.  But, I certainly understand the limited budget.  I don't have a fish finder yet because I spent a bit extra on some things like an HX-851 rather than something cheaper.

My standard horizon is basic but it works pretty well. It's sort of a pain to program but it's held up well to my dropping and slamming it into things. I think it's the 290, the floating model. I always have it tied to my PFD though so I don't know if that really matters. I think it was 100 bucks on sale at fishermans.

Hmmm...We should consider testing that radio out Monday at Depoe, or Pacific City.  A co-worker of mine is a diver and told me where a giant Cabezon or two are living  not too far off-shore of Cape Kiwanda.  Of course Pelagic Paddler probably already found them  ;), but it is worth a shot.   Oh, and I have a Cobra Radio that has a battery that seems to last forever and it has stood up to a lot of abuse for a few years all for about $99.

For marine use, VHF.

For lakes and rivers, probably FRS/GMRS.  I know VHF transmissions on land are prohibited, but I don't know how they deal with inland lakes and rivers.

On the Columbia (and I assume the Willy) VHF is the standard. Probably on "navigable waterways" as opposed to small lakes & streams. If the Coast Guard can reach you VHF is the medium.

I have the HX-851.

Steve, did you pick up your radio yet?  I have the Cobra HH330 which is waterproof and floating.  You can get them at nearly $100.   Like Craig said,  The battery lasts a long time.  Not sure if he has this model but I sure like this one.   Check it out here,

Dick's also have them over at the washington square mall.  That is where I picked mine up.   :)

That is the one I have.  And thanks for the link because it pointed me to this:

I can never hear if anyone is calling me when the radio is in the pocket of my PFD 'cause I'm deaf as a post.  This could help if I clip it to my shoulder.

That could be the problem.  But, it is the sound of freedom.

Very well put Craig!

And I like the new mic addition.  I didn't know it had that option.   Amazingly, because I as well like the sound of freedom, still can hear mine in the lifevest.  That thing turns up pretty loud.   ;D

Fisherman's Marine had a great deal on the Uniden Atlantis 250. I picked it up for $79.  Regularly $100.  Haven't opened the box. Any body have an opinion?
