Our family spends the holiday on the beach in Area 5, I tried unsuccessfully to catch halibut here last year.  Thanks to some good advice (hats off to Rory & Fishnut Again, and my friend Doug who showed me how to clean them) and maybe a tiny bit of luck I was 2 for 2 this weekend, was able to fish Sat. & Sun and came back with these smaller versions of my earlier catch.

The Sat. fish was actually the 2nd take down of the day, for some reason the 1st one wasn't hooked, had one other solid bite 2 which amounted to as much action as I've had in all my former attempts.  It was 12 lbs, it was exciting but I knew it was on the small side.  The earlier one felt bigger, but they all pull hard at first.

The Sunday fish hit in nearly the same location as the Saturday fish and in the same depth as the other 3 fish I caught this year.   When it hit I was in the process of peeling out of some layering, had my drytop & PFD off and the rod in the holder, as I'm pulling my wool top off I hear that lovely sound of line peeling off my rod, no way, now what?  I took the rod out and reeled and didn't feel the fish there, took in a bit more line and it started tugging again, YES!!! it is still there, I set the hook and reeled enough to be confidant the fish was well hooked, set the rod back in the holder and put my PFD back on, had no idea how big it might be but thought this to be a good move.  Turned out to weigh in at around 18lbs.

It was a Fishtastic weekend, and good family times too.
