The regs say that it is illegal to retain or remove a sixgill from the water... there is no indication that it is illegal to catch them.

You can be fined for specifically targeting a species that isn't open to retention.

You may be right:

http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/aug1500a/
http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/feb0102b/

If a WDFW official stops by your kayak and asks you what you are fishing for, what are you going to tell them?

I think this may warrant an email or call to WDFW.  A search of their website does not even turn up the news releases - you need to specifically search the news release archives.

Yeah John, no sixgill but there are species you can target, only offshore though I think.

I would expect it to be bad ju-ju to target a species not allowed for retention.  ANd in the regs wherever 6-gills are mentioned it says the season is closed.  I take the "no removal from water" as regulating accidental by-catch.

Mind you... I said I want... Not that I could or would... That being said the reg indicate you must release a six gill in areas 5-13 (or whatever that last marine area is) is says that you need to report that tag number and color of the six gill you catch. It says that it is illegal to "retain" or "remove from the water" I haven't found anywhere where it indicates you can't catch them. All those things together would seem to indicate you can catch them.

I haven't found it.  I emailed WDFW last year once to get a straight answer, but they never emailed me back.  Which is interesting, because I have emailed them other questions that they responded to.

How does one target dogfish?

In the summer, it's more like how do you NOT target dogfish.  The only thing I haven't caught a dogfish on is a metal jig.  But I'm sure you can get them on those if you really try.  They tend to like bait though.  I only know this because that's all I catch when mooching for salmon.

We should totally have a dogfish tournament. :D

Only if you eat them afterwards .... apparently one of my beloved hobbies as a kid is greatly frowned upon, but damn it is fun to cut the tip of the dog fish's nose off and watch them swim around on the surface. Oh I was also informed by a marine biologist at age 8 that throwing rocks at seagulls was illegal. My dad's responce "Did he hit one yet" Fish checker "No" Dad "So what are you crying about? The seagulls are fine"

Ah the good ole days.

Six Gills are cool sharks and can get really big. I worked with a commercial prawner in BC that used to catch them on long line gear before that became illegal. Somewhere I have to find the picture of a 12 footer on his deck.

While trying not to catch dogfish one fine day.  I reeled this puppy in and below me saw the biggest school of dogfish.  Wanted my lure back.
