I'd be more than happy to donate some Puget Sound dog fish to the English. :)

Local (former) salmon guide Jim Jorgensen tells a story about doing a charter for a father and son from England. They weren't getting anything, and eventually hooked a dogfish. Jim was about to toss it overboard when the father yells, "What are you doing?!? Don't you know how expensive those are?"

They ended up targeting dogfish the rest of the day.  The vacationers took a fish box full of those nasty dogs back to England, happy as larry.

I'm surprised guides haven't marketed towards them. They could make a killing filling coolers with doggies for the Limeys!

Years ago up in Hood's canal had a couple of young kids in my boat bottom fishing with some strips of clam and hooked a spiny dogfish by accident.  It was bleeding a little when we released it and after that (probably with the blood and all) we could not keep them off our lines.  So I pulled out a couple of stiff trout rods and oh my gawd, talk about some fun.  We caught sharks from proably 10 a.m. until near dark.  It was an absolute blast on the light gear.  So don't overlook this fishery for a good time............

Someone told me to try target dogfish, because people target them at East coast and actually eat them. Is it worth trying? If yes, could somebody help me with the regulations? I can't find anything about limits/sizes/gear/etc related to dogfish. I got 2 weeks between classes and I want to hit the water and catch something.

I used to catch and cook them when I lived in Seattle.  I can't help you on the current reg's, but about 2005/06 anglers were permitted to fish for them year around, no size restriction, no tackle restriction.  Just because you are targeting them doesn't mean you can ignore other regulations regarding rockfish and other species.  it could be a lengthy explanation to a fisheries officer.

light tackle is great fun but as said by others, they chew up leader really bad.  Keep them cold if you plan to retain and bleed them immediately.  Urea in the tissue is the problem with dogfish.  I soaked the meat in milk overnight in the refrig.  And take care to cut out the bones, which are many.

They are a bit of work to prepare but when nothing else is available, dogfish can be adequate.  Perhaps its an acquired taste.

let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

They were by-catch, and not desirable at that back East, at least when I lived there as a kid (late 80's thru mid-90's).  Caught several while surf casting for stripers and blue fish.  Tried eating them.  Now, I'm not usually too picky, but these were totally inedible.  But, they may have not been properly cared for.  I know they were gutted right away, not sure if they were bled, but they probably weren't iced enough.

I think I'll pass on dog fish. I put it in the same category as Atlantic salmon and Kraft Mac-n-cheese. Some people eat it but I would rather just a salad at that point .... and I don't like salad.

What's wrong with Mac-n-cheese?!?!?  You take that back!

They're not hard to target, but rough on the pallet... I've tried them a couple of times, but can't find a way that agrees with me. I love real shark like black tip, but just can't stomach this sorry excuse for a predator

If you are going to eat boxed Mac N Cheese at least get the one with the goo cheese instead of the powdered stuff....

Dog fish tend to leave during the winter. I don't think I've caught one before May. You are better off trying for early season steelhead or late season chum.

What would be the best place to go for chums? I'd love to try. Heck... I would be happy to fish flounder or something like that. I programmed too much past 3 months and now I temporarily hate computers.

For flounder,  if you head north from Seattle, there is Richmond Beach (I hear its good though I've never fished there) and Picnic Point (I've had success for flounder but you have a decent portage up an over the R R tracks). If you do a search for either of these locals, you will find some tips.  Good luck,  Wayne
