I've been looking at the various small video cams -- the GoPro, the PlaySport, the Samsung -- and I'm wondering how their microphones handle wind. I was reminded how intrusive wind noise can be after taking some clips with a standard digital in 15-knot winds at Crane Prairie this past week.

There's no good solution that i've found. Wind noise on the playsport is horrendous. The mic on the gopro is on the camera, inside housing and is predictably deadened.

I gave up on the mics and just add music to my videos.  Currently, I use a GoPro. A person I know uses an mp3 voice recorder and just syncs the audio with the video later.

Before I broke my playsport, I was planning on gluing some thin foam around the mic pickup to help lessen the windnoise effect...

Well, I'm not an audio engineer, but I work at a company that specializes in noise suppression, so I asked the real audio engineers about this.  There are few packages out there that have wind noise suppression (or probably more generically called noise suppression), but if your video editing software has audio editing capabilities, try setting a high pass filter in the 2-300 Hz range.  Most wind noise is less than 300 Hz.

Allen's suggestion is a lot better. But on the lower tech side i use a waterproof case for my contour HD and it mutes out almost everything. Downside is that if I want to say something on camera I better say it real loud.

I'm no audio engineer, but I do know how to use a search engine. ;D

Googled "wind noise suppression" and found zeppelins and dead cats. It's those fuzzy things you see in movie outtakes and documentaries. This place sells a stick on bit of fur for your camcorder.

But it seems to me a bit of fake fur from the craft store stuck around the mic would be worth the effort. If it doesn't work you can always use it to tie flies.
