Pink Salmon fishing derby in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, September 1st and 2nd, 2012.  Looks as though first place prize is a new yak.  Hope to see and meet some fellow members.

This is interesting. I live in bellingham and could get there relatively easily.

I am curious about your pink runs. They only run thru our neck of the woods on odd years. What is the pattern up there? Are even year runs smaller?

The pink runs on the "inside" (between VI and the mainland) are smaller and come into some of the rivers and creeks in the mid to upper island area. They do happen on the even years.

Very cool!  Looks like I have friends coming into town that weekend (Labor Day) so I won't be able to make the competition :(  But, I'd be very interested in meeting up with anybody who's gonna fish the pink run in the fall.  I imagine there are a few silvers mixed in?

I thought pinks were every other year as well - and I had an outstanding pink season last year.  If it is on, I will be there :)

Interesting idea about targeting weights for "other prizes"

If nothing else it will give me a reason to finally use my "enhanced WA DL" if I go up for that.  6hrs from Olympia not including ferry ride...Very doable

OlySpec--Would it be faster for you to drive to Port Angeles and take the ferry from there to Victoria?

That is the route I am planning on if I go.

Any other takers on this one?

T2 - I haven't got a chance to get back up to Barkley lately, waiting on the birth of my second child and he/she is taking their time.  I took my son up there a couple weeks after he was born so hopefully i'll get up there for some fishing soon.

I'm not sure about the return patterns up here as of yet.  This fishery has been resurrected by local interest groups over the last few years.  I know that I witnessed more Pinks last year than I ever had in the past.  If bigger runs occur during even years, I expect this to be a great year.

I wasn't sure until just last week but my wife and I were able to get this Coming week off and are heading up to Nanaimo this Friday. I have signed up for the tournament and it sounds like it should be fun. No big expectations on my part but would like to at least have the right gear. I am bringing a fly rod that I was planing to use in Tofino for Coho later in the trip but was also going to bring spinning gear. Any recommendations for spinners, spoons, trolling, jigging, casting, etc. This will be my first attempt to fish for pinks. Wouldn't mind meeting up on the water and fishing together at least for a little while.

We have family in Nanaimo so not sure how my Sunday will look but plan on fishing most of Saturday and then attending the salmon barbecue.

Oh and on the route. My wife and I have been going up to tofino for the last four years and have gone both routes (from Portland) on a couple occasions. We never timed it but definitely felt like it was quicker (minus a border hold up or Seattle rush hour traffic) going up through Tsawwassen(sp?) to catch the ferry. But going through Port Angeles was prettier. We have a reservation for the 8:15pm ferry from Tsawwassen. Anyone else headed up that way?

Hey TX,

Great to hear another forum member is making the tourney. I spoke with the fish whisperer last night and he's also planning on it.

I've been casting flies for pinks so I'm not sure what gear people are using but spinners and spoons in smaller sizes in pinks and chartreuse would be similar to the flies I'm casting.  Your fly rod may also be of interest. I'll have some extra flies tied if you bring it along and need some.

Definitely meet up on the water and fish, I'll let you know what I know about the area if you aren't familiar. Im not against chasing Bass on Sunday if the Pink fishing is really slow. I really hope we are releasing fish as we can only keep 4 but as I intend to fish all weekend so if it's really slow I'll consider going where I know fish are biting.

Someone contact Rudy, flytyer_396, and see if he wants to go. he's in that northern teir area as well.

@Isaac,
Torque is a high retail boat. Nice of them to offer that kind of money. Sure it may sound funny, but remember you can pull the motor and battery on that puppy and use it with a drop in skeg. Besides, winner would be using it after the tourney.........
