I got a nice fly vise for christmas and for some patterns that I'd like to make requires an epoxy head finish. And to keep that epoxy nice and even requires a motorized turner. Looked around at the commercial products and of course the pricing is on the high side. Not to say they're not good products but I'm Mr. Frugal. Also there's that pride of making all your own gear... :glasses3:

Found a nice tutorial on making one.

Looks easy, and the price for the motor seems darn reasonable.

Hey Zee here is another route for ya. BBQ rottisserie motor. Thats what I used to build a drying motor for rod wrapping. I just had to build chuck to hold the rod's in.

Have heard that as well. Sure I'll be making rods some day soon too, so...  :D

Being the cheapest man alive (an REAL oxymoron in fly fishing)
I found a rotisserie in a thrift store. Stick a piece of pool noodle on the skewer and it works GREAT. A bit slow for rod wrapping though. A sewing machine motor and pedal are better suited for that. Again, the Goodwill (and preferably a Goodwill Outlet store) is a great place to find a donor machine.
(Told you I was cheap) ;)

FFTW Actual I use the rottisurie motor for dry rods that have just been epoxied. It works good helps from getting uneven build up. I tried a sewing machine motor before but couldn't keep the rod from bouncing up and down. (ta dom chi) ;D
You know what else works nice is an old power drill plugged in to a pedal control for wrapping.
