I have never used my drive to bust my line.  I have always just put myself as straight above the snag as I could, hung my feet over the sides, reeled in, and pulled.  Generally, 65# main, 30lb leader.  It can be difficult if the snag is at the swivel and I have to break the mainline.  I also make sure not to use the rod at all.  It should be straight in line with the snag, if it isn't, you're making it more difficult than it really is.

Add a strong drift and big swells and this can be a recipe for an unintended swim.

Sounds like a interesting go pro vid!

Use 30 lb braid on a medium heavy rod, think a salmon or sturgeon set up. If you use heavier line it can difficult to break off especially if you're stuck on kelp.

I am using 50# braid with 20# mono leaders, and have had no problem breaking off - in fact, I am going to step up to 30# mono, since I broke off a couple of times on fish. No more dropper loops in the line!
You have a hobie. In a paddle kayak it can be we really challenging to break off 50 lb, especially when hooked up on kelp. Which there is plenty of at PC.

I'm on a wilderness systems ride (Paddle yak) and I've never really had much of a problem breaking off the 20 lb leader. Whenever I have broken off I always have leader left and if it's too short < 2 feet I just tie on a new leader.

In an effort to avoid seasickness, I pre-tie several mono leaders at home with a swivel on one end and a snap swivel on the other end.  My mainline has a snap swivel that I hook the leaders to.  I used to tie the two lines together and use about 6 or more feet of leader, but that led to nausea while re-tying on the salt.  I have not noticed a difference in performance. My only broken lines have come on snags.

I'm going to hit the salt Thursday morning.  Going to try the north side of Cape Lookout.  Hope to launch at around 7:30 am from the day use parking area just south of the campground.  I'd enjoy some company if anyone wants to join me.  Hopefully the wind won't be too bad.

same here. lost too many bigger fish that way, even with knots that are supposed to retain 100% line strength (doesn't seem to work with power-pro). now i'm using either a t-swivel or a spreader to attach a fly.

Thinking about trying salmon from DB Friday. If anyone wants to poke around out there with me, give me holler.

Saturday's forecast looks amazing, but family stuff is pushing me out there Friday.

I also still have to find a place to watch Sonnen pummel Silva!

There is no such thing as a 100% knot, the Bimini loop is advertised as such, but it is NOT EASY to tie it exactly right, it is usually about an 80-85% knot
when tied indifferently.  The "eye-crosser", (Duncan loop AKA uni-knot) twice thru eye with 3 turns is a great knot for 12-50# test, easy to tie and better than 90%.  The
Palomar is also 90% or so, when tied properly----no twists, and the loop up and over the knot against the running line.  I've heard good things about the worm knot, and the San Diego jam knot, but they are not as simple and easy to tie.
Never underestimate the ability of our policymakers to fail to devise and implement intelligent policy
