I had a couple of hours this morning so I took advantage and paddled out in the Big C to soak my gear and catch up on some technical reading.  I had the best intentions of bringing a Gopro and camera but forgot all about it in my pre-dawn haze.  Too bad.....

An hour in, my clicker started screaming.  Put the book away and straight into a fun fight.  The boats around me all perked up and pulled out the binos.  After a fairly brief struggle, a dime bright hatchery hen was in the net. BooYah!

15min after dropping my line again (as I re-read the chapter I'd completely forgotten about in the previous excitement) the rod burried.  Book safely away, I grabbed my rod and went to work.  Somewhere around minute 2, the hook was tossed and I tried to refocus on the book.  Not happening.

About a half hour later, as I was leaving a message on kykfshr's phone, the rod went off again!  I faintly remember leaving a message like "Hey Scott, OH SHIT!  I'M GETTING A HARD BITE!  GOTTA GO." *Click*

5min later the phone rings and it's Scott.  The conversation went something like "Hey man, I'm fighting a HOT one, I'll call you back".  10min more and 5 netting attempts later I finally managed to scoop up a thick, angry native.  Dang but this fish worked me over.

Durring the fight, I could hear someone anchored a little upstream and outside me hooting.  After the release he struck up a conversation with "You know, I've been reading that Kayak Guys Column in Northwest Sportsman for a couple years.  I'm really glad I finally got to see someone catch a fish from one of those in person!"  He'd gotten some great shots of the action so exchanged info..  Hopefully he e-mails them to me so I can add them to this post.

If you've been thinking about fishing for summer steehead from your yak, now's the time to put it into action.

The winning ticket today was:
18' to 20' deep
6oz of lead on a 16" dropper
Small pink S-n-G with black wings and matching prawn

I added a small stinger hook today and ran it thru the side of the tail.  Seems to have worked as I didn't have any drive-bys like I did last week.

Who wants to fish around Sandy/Camas/Washougal/Chinook Landing? Let's have a Steelhead Derby: 'HeadBangers! Need some seasoned leaders to show the way.

Count me in, just need a date.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I'm good for either day next weekend, I'm also good for Thursday and Friday. Let me know who wants to go where and when. I'll go more than once if anyone's up for it.

My personal preference is Camas but I'll go wherever we have some steelhead guru to follow...
