It's a go for the Salmon Tournament in September.  It will be held on Saturday September 22, prime time for the lower bay.  This Fishery has been closed to Chinook retention for some time and having it open provides a great opportunity for us.  These fish are heading up the Chehalis which is nicknamed "the little Kenai" by some of the local guides and for good reason with fish in the 30 to 50 pound range being caught and released while fishing for Coho.  This year we get to keep them.  I am looking forward to this one

ENTRY FEE:  $15

ALL PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF HEROES ON THE WATER

The Launch location will be the Johns River boat launch.  This will give the closest access for us to the best fishing in the lower bay.  Event starts at first light and weigh in closes at 4:00PM.

The Westport Inn www.westportwamotel.com will be the event headquarters.  They have a nice banquet room (Coho Hall) that we can use.  Rates are $25 for tent sites, $33 for RV, and $99 for rooms.  When making reservations let them know your with NWKA for the derby.  Westport Inn phone number is (360) 268-0111.

There is also a Salmon festival on Saturday.  Here is a message about the Salmon Tales Festival from Mike at the Chamber of Commerce who has been a tremendous help with planning and is also donation the two night oceanfront condo Prize.

Anglers

While you are here on the 22nd derby there will be a festival in Wesport celebrating salmon.  During "Salmon Tales" which will be on the grounds of the Maritime Museum from 11-4.  There will be vendors, music, beer garden and a smoked salmon competition.  Attached is an info sheet below.  The Maritime Museum is within walking distance from the Wesport Inn where you may be staying.  Have great tourney and if back in time stop by the festival, have a beer and tell a few tales of your own!

This sounds great and after I missed ORC this year it's good to have another tournament to attend.

However, in my pre-preemptive move to put this on my family's online planning calander before my wife could sign us up for something else first, I noticed/remembered that September 22nd is my daughter's 3rd birthday.   So, enjoy your salmon fishing tournament and try not to be jealous of the totally awesome princess themed birthday party I get to attend.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

I'm tentative, pending discussions with SWMBO and a look at my study schedule for the PE exam.  If I go, it'll probably be my only fishing between now and November.

If I go I would probably tent it.  Hopefully the whole family would come.

Did you do the mechanical exam?

If you have a 7 foot medium action rod that you're holding at a 35 degree angle off the water, pointed at 80 degrees toward the bow, and the fish is stripping line off a reel with the drag set at 9#, what is the rotational force being applied to the kayak and how much more would it take to tip an Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 over carrying a 6'3", 225# man.

No, but the boss lady does not need to know that.
