Problem is they aren't breaking any laws.  To be honest IHOP didn't tell use wether we are talking 2 fish or 20.  Some by-catch is unavoidable, not modifying your behavior to limit more is greasy. IMO, a conscientious fishermen chooses/changes techniques or moves locations to exclude catching orange fish.  My guess is that the charters first priority is to get their sports catching fish.  It appears that they are fine doing that at the expense of already depressed fish stocks.   At best they should at least make an effort to send them back down.

It's kind of sad, but one deck hand bonking 15-20 people's fish, untangling their lines, making sure their bait looks good, probably not a lot of time to send each by-catch back down in a manner that would decrease morbidity.

They should make time for it though, or everybody loses. Less fish, more regulations.

I'd say about 25-30% or more of the fish were Yelloweye and Canary. If they are so "rare" not sure why so many were caught. I need to read up on the sitch.

Okay guys here is the deal.  Looks like I will be heading down to the property tomorrow, the campsite is only 11 miles from PC.  Here are directions:

If coming down Hwy 18, take the Hebo turn off (Hwy 22) right before Spirit Mtn. Casino.  Around 14 miles there will be the Pacific City turn-off to the left, that is Little Nestucca River Rd. (Hwy 130).  Turn left there,  about 1 mile you will cross a bridge, the second driveway on the left about 150 yards past the bridge is the entrance.  I will put a pool noodle in the gatepost.

If coming from Hwy 101,  turn onto the Little Nestucca River Rd. (Hwy 130).  At about the 8.5 mile marker you will pass an abandoned farm house on the right.  The driveway entrance is about 100 yards past that on the right.  Again I will post a pool noodle in the gate post.

Will be hitting PC at around 7 a.m. on Sat. and DB at around 7 a.m. on Sun.  All are welcome to come camp, or to show up to fish/crab, or just share a campfire and a cold one.  There is no cell service at the property (thank God), so calling me after tomorrow around noon will do no good.  If you want to call and confirm just give me a shout or send a message.  (503) 591-5159   Hope to put some faces to some names, wet a line, share a cold one and cook some seafood up.

Three years ago it was yellow/lime colored so now it is a faded yellow.  Yes it will be the only pool noodle stuck in a gatepost at mile marker 8.5

Just tossed 'em on top, made no effort to drop them deep and many seemed to float. Not too sure how many recovered.

The keepers often had swim bladders poking out of their gullets.

Which charter was it?  Really sad to think of the impact of charters behaving like this on a daily or twice daily basis.  Many of the restrictive angling regulations we deal with (depth limits etc) are in place to protect the "orange fish" and help their depressed stocks recover.  Yet it seems the "pukers" are  fine with leaving a trail of floaters in their wake in the name of profit.
probly all those fish died. pukers are just another component of the commercial fleet, imo, & they aren't the only commercials doing damage. Jeff posted this earlier http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/segments/view/1805

I'll catch ya out at DB Sunday morning for sure.  Looking forward to meeting more peeps!  I plan on heading north out of the harbor and heading up to Boiler Point if the currents are not too bad.  I'll be driving down Sat am, so I will miss out on PC.

Younggun and I set out this morning to take jim-dawg up on his offer of hospitality. Made it to DB just after 7:00am where jim-dawg was getting setting up. He had a non-kayaking buddy with him who happened to know Younggun - small world. Newguy showed up shortly after. Short story shorter - day was beautiful, fishing sucked, somebody found out they are susceptible to mal-de-mer, and we were off the water by 10:00am. Younggun & I figured we better head back to flat water until we figure out some remedies. Sorry we couldn't spend more time with jim-dawg - he's another of the great guys we meet here on NWKA.

Wish I could have made it out with y'all.  I stared out at that calm looking water all day and just wished I could be on it rather than looking at it....

Dont have a lot of charter experience, only about 3 total, but couldnt the rail rats send the endangered back down themselves if they know how and have the right rig with them?

Hey, just got back into town from work and wanted to say thanks to all who showed up at PC and DB.  Allen, it was nice to meet you at PC on Sat. Hope you and Jammer had a good time with the NBC crew.  Keep us all up to speed on that.  Fishing was not that good, I lost a salmon on Sat. but a couple of us yakkers caught Coho.  I did get some crab at PC.  Sunday at DB was great fishing but lousy catching,  Sherm and Young Gun showed up and we had some fun until YG got a little green around the gills.  So we called it a day a little early, (not like we were tearing it up anyway).  Anyhow, thanks to all who showed and those who wanted to but couldn't make it.  P.S.  to the friend of Ryan's who borrowed my crab trap at PC on Sat.  Give me a call, I would really like to get that back from you before I get another chance to use it.  My number is on the buoy.  Thanks again to all......
