Hey y'all in the know...having never fished P.C. and because a window of opportunity may open up for tomorrow or Thursday and having a crab pot I'd like to drop....what's the depth in general from the surf break to the rock? I want to make sure I have enough rope on the pot so I don't make an accidental contribution.

They may have the chart you need here

http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/PacificCoastViewerTable.shtml

Otherwise the deepest I recall seeing (as long as you stay north of Haystack) was ~65', but that was when my FF was on the fritz so I wouldn't take that for much!

The sandy area south of the rock, where I have dropped my pots, is 35-40 feet. I ran about 60 feet of rope and added a 5 lb weight.

Thanks fellas!  Just added about 5#'s of rebar so hopefully I'm good! Still waiting to hear if I'm fishing tomorrow or Thursday.

Make sure to drop pots WELL south of the rock.  Be sure to use very visible floats and sinking line, or add a weight (6-8oz)to your line about 15ft below the float.   Nothing would sour our great relationship between kayakers and dory fishermen than having them run over pots in the "non-traditonal" spots and foul their prop.  Hard to land a dory in the surf if you spin your prop off.   Crabbing has been great in the ocean lately!

A few weeks back, I pulled a very full pot in 70 feet about 500 yards south. There were several other buoys in the area.

Sherm is spot on.  300+ yard south of the rock is great!  If you see other pots you're in the right neighborhood.  Make sure to sink floating pot lines, floating pot lines are a nightmare to a powerboat skipper.  I have some longline clips I'd be happy to share that make attaching a lead sinker to your crab lines a snap.

I appreciate the offer!  I'm only dropping one pot and I have 1 line clip so I think I'm good to go!  Looking like tomorrow is gonna be the day for me.

Ours were a 1/4 mile south east of the southern end of the rock. Very full pot.

I've been successful in the same areas as they've suggested. Been debating on whether or not I want to bring a crab pot tomorrow or not.... maybe I should re-load the car.

I just don't like that the crabbing is in the opposite direction of where I want to be fishing.... hmmm...

Troll a cut plug herring after you drop your pot and catch a salmon to tide you over until you get to the other side.  It worked for Sinker on Saturday. ;)

I still have your pool noodle.  I will get it back to you next time.  I found it in my trailer when I got home.
