Right on!  Well, I'm at your mercy, with no boat and no truck to haul it I will have to bum a ride and a yak but will gladly spring for the gas and bait or lunch or whatever so as to get to the water.  Would much prefer to have a boat and like the idea of peddaling although I have 0 experience. We changed our plans just a bit and Sat is the day for me now, we will be heading down Fri.  So Craig or Noah or whoever has the spare boat and the means to get us there, I'd love to join you guys, I don't know much about this type of fishing, and probably don't have the right gear but will try to get some together.

Thanks again!

I really don't know the fishery that well either.  My objective is to just be lucky.  I use my salmon rod with a flasher and a cut plug herring like in Spot's front page article.

I'll be launching off Waikiki beach tomorrow AM and trolling around A jetty and the light house, unfortunately I only have one yak

I would also love to go, I am a newbie, so maybe I can PM somebody before heading out about a basic checklist to dummy check my packing and setup.

I have been setting up to fish with lures, but I guess I could figure something out.

I live downtown Vancouver, where are y'all coming from?

I'm game for it if this thing is still happening.  Should be a madhouse out there this weekend though.

Be careful. B10 isn't the best water to start on.

I understand the serious nature of the water and would be paddling with a PFD, signalling devices and with water temps in the upper 50s to mid 60s, a wetsuit. Not to mention that I would like to head out with a group of other boats to avoid going out alone. Since I am fairly confident in class 3 water I am confident in my kayak balance, paddling, and worst case flipping and remounting in deep water. I hope this eases your mind enough to fish.

What time would you start fishing that area? I see low tide is forecasted to be at 0900, so my guess is at the desired fishing location by 0800 at minimum.

Would you actually want to be near buoy 10 or would you be looking for a less crowded environment?

well I will check back tomorrow.

Paddling the water is one thing, trolling/fishing it adds to the difficulty, plus the danger of boat traffic and a swift current. It's best if you can go out with someone with experience that can show you the ropes, especially in that area. What boat are you fishing out of?

12'8 Ocean Kayak Caper

I am not set on Buoy 10, but I am set on getting out fishing this weekend. I have a free day this Sat, and I hear that is where the fish are.

Well I will be back tonight after work, I need to figure out where I am headed to this Sat. I am just not familiar with where else the fish will be.

Thanks for you inputs and concern.

I would stay away from B10 proper and fish a bit upriver.  Also watch the tides, they can get ripping down there.

I went out close to bouy 10  (I chickened out getting way out there ) on Saturday hooked one really nice fish but lost it and ended up with a few crab as well...it did get a little sketchy a couple times but I think if you watch your tides and listen to bar reports its just fine ...I also talked to another kayaker who was trolling inside illwaco channel by the coast guard station and he got one keeper

Electritionangler,

Mind if I ask where you launched and how you planned your trip with the tides? Thanks.

I went out on the incoming tide and fished the slack, I've learned over the years that outgoing tide can get pretty nasty so I tried to avoid it although I still got caught in some good rip currents ( sketchy part #1 )... It is hard to really plan anything out there though, being so close to the river your really in that hot spot where river meets ocean. The best thing you can do is just pay attention to the water and keep your VHF on at all times listening to the bar reports.... I launched off of waikiki beach just below the light house on the washington side, it usually has a really calm surf plus you can paddle out about 100 yds and drop a crab trap then pick it up on your way in.
