I kind of skimmed through the thread, but one bit of wisdom was missing. Don't store your ropes inside your pots/traps/rings on the paddle out or back. If your bungies come loose and your traps sink with the rope and float inside, buh bye traps.
That's why I use a short piece of rope (3-4 feet) with clips/carabiners/knots at each end to secure the pot to my yak.  If you want to keep stuff with your boat it's best to attach it in an easy to release manner.  I like brass clips best, but settle for cheap carabiners if nothing else is easy to find.

wow thanks for all the comments and recommendations! re: crabbing. We went to the Nehalem Bay area just off the park boat ramp today and caught lots of crab but they were all undersized. I have an ultimate native 14.1 solo and it holds the 2 x 2 square pots pretty well, but I'll think I'll use the zip tie idea and the harness on the side sounds smarter also.
We used the rod and reel type snap trap with a chicken leg on it which although small was really effective. We also tried this little square cage thing on a spinning rod with a lot of zip tie snares attached but it was not very effective.
The locals didn't seem to be fairing much better so I guess the crabs were there, but just too small.
It was fun but my visions of boiled crabs were dashed until maybe  I hit the QFC on Friday, :) thanks again for your support in this new venture...

Too bad, I was amazed on our Depoe Bay charter how 90% of the crab were large keeper males. The shells were a little thin and they hadn't buffed up yet but all in all very nice. The tragedy was my fridge died the night I'd picked about 6 crab and all the meat was warm when I went to make lunch the next morning. Got to get back out there and restock next week.
