I spent 3 years as a shellfish harvest management biologist on Hood Canal before coming down to Oregon for my PhD two years ago.

In grad school my thesis work was on the recruitment to the benthos of juvenile fishes on the continental shelf of the New York Bight.   As part of a larger lab I did a lot of ichthyoplankton work as well.   Since then, I've spent 14 years with the Smithsonian working on marine invasive species ecology.

Grad school and my first few years of work were full of exciting field work, research cruises, etc..  but for the last 10 or so years I've been sitting at the computer doing data analysis and report writing.  It almost sounds like there needs to be some sort of marine scientist support group out there.

A subset of NWKA, the bright minds of kayak fishing. We can get together, fish a bit, then go cry in our PNW micro-brews about how we miss all the exciting fieldwork we did when we were young.  Sounds Great!

Ha! :laughing4:

Well if it makes you feel any better, I only sample fish for the first 2 hours or so of the day.  The rest of my time is spent in data entry, validation, faciltiy inspections and oversight.
