I am in hoodsport wa for a scuba class, and kicking myself for not bringing my boat and a pole.

There are fish jumping all over the place.

I think next year I will be getting a Washington liscense!
I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

I saw a group of yakers fishing in front of the dive site today.

Just outside of the hatchery in hoodsport.

Looked like a yellow Malibu, a yellow ok, and perhaps a red boat too.  Was that anyone on here?

Damn, I knew I should have gone to say hi.

Is anyone else on here into diving by chance?  After seeing what is going on beneath the surface, I definitely want to get back down there!

I saw schools of copper rock fish, black rock fish, a ton of crab munching on a dead salmon, various little glowy slugy things, and I tried to feed my face to a wolf eel hiding in a sunken boat :o

It was a really cool experience.

NWKA&D anyone?

I am certified but don't have equipment anymore. Sadly you cant really fish for anything but salmon in the canal.

I too am certified. I dove around the hood canal last summer. I'm not into spear fishing but I do enjoy picking up some crabs. I'm planning on doing a few dives before the summers ends.

I think those glow slug things are called nudibranchs ;) Well actually there are those bright red sea cucumbers too

See any octopus? Those guys are awesome.

I'm always looking for a dive buddy!

Nope no octopi.  Nudibranches, that's what they were.

Yeah let me know.  I need to get quite a few more dives in before I will be comfortable planning my own trips, but I would love to tag along.

I got my drysuit cert too, so I am cold water ok.

Will be renting gear for sure though.

NWKA&D anyone?

There is a section on this forum for divers - look on the main forum page.
I was certified many years ago, but pretty much quit diving when I moved back to the NW. Just too cold and too little visibility, although there is much more to see here in these fertile waters. Sure is great to see what is going on down there.

+1 on being too cold. I've been Open Water certified for years when I lived back home and I would akso free dive to 30ft max spear fishing. Nowadays I keep my ass above water. But, I have to admit I did dive off my cousins boat in just shorts as a dare at Solo pt, but it was only 12ft and I had an incentive of picking moon snails (back when it was still open) Tasty! Also it was over 90° that summer and water was probably 65°

Kinda wanting to try free diving with a wet suit...maybe next year.

I haven't got my dry suit cert. I survive renting a 7mill wetsuit, shallower waters are alright but I have found deeper than ~50' it starts to get uncomfortable.

I've been free diving in PS for years for crab and Lings during the seasons. I use a Hawaiian sling on the ling, and only breath-hold to make it fair.  If there around I get one (the limit) within 20 minutes, more often within the first 10 minutes. Plankton blooms can kill the visibility during the season (late May, early June), but when it clears it's perfect. I just use my 4/3 surf suit and a hoot, no booties, duck feet fins, gardening gloves, and 11 pounds of lead. I know that's a bit light for most folks, but I like the freedom and can last an hour or so in that gear.  I taught diving for years and have logged many thousands of dives all over the world, but the diving or even the free diving in the PS can be incredible at times. It's well worth the effort.
