I hate to be the one asking what might be a dumb question but...after looking at the picture of Fungunnin hefting the huge lingcod in the trip of a life time thread, a question that I've had before came to mind. Would it be possible to use a lip gripper on a salmon? Why or why not? Has anyone ever tried it and to what result? Thanks.

Anything is possible but a net is your friend.

Lingcod come up with their mouth open most of the time and getting the lip gripper on them can be a challenge. The larger fish are actually easier because they shake their head less. Trying to lip grip a salmon is going to be a hell of a challenge. If all you have in lip gripper or nothing I would probably opt to try and just pull the fish into my lap and then hope I could hang on to it.

Salmon also have narrower mouths unlike the very round lip grippable mouths of the various rock fish.

I have tried.  It did not work well at all.  I was trying to get the hook out of a native springer without using a net, and it wouldn't hold still.

I think the mouth shape is all wrong.

I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

I would also question if the jaw is even strong enough to handle being lip-gripped.

I have to be honest... I am not sure I understand the value of a lip gripper at all.  Seabass you grab my the bottom lip, lings you grab under the gill plate... I know I must be missing something cause lots of you guys use them.

Well, guess I'll scratch that idea.  I still haven't had a chance to use the one I've got. Got a couple of great nets,  though.

Sometimes it's convenient to clip a ling to your side carry handles with the lip grippers until you've dealt with hooks, freshened bait, and are ready to bring it in to bonk, bleed and bag it. Good for doubles and triples.

I wouldn't say they're a necessity, but they come in handy once in a while.

There's at least one DAMHIK floating around out there about this.

A net and a game clip.  Net the salmon, pull it aboard, insert game clip, remove hook.  You can now bleed and control the fish easily, even letting it bleed out in the water (watch for mammals!).  Leash your game clip.

I don't carry a net when I'm out for lingcod, just the lip grippers and a game clip.

I was lucky to land my hitch hiker ling with lip grippers.  A net would be helpful if hitch hikers are likely.

Just a postscript on this thread. There is an article in the Oct./Nov. STS by Scott Haugen regarding using a Boga Grip as a way to secure salmon and steelhead that are to be released without having to net them and bring them in the boat. It sounds like  a less stressfull way to do it. It's on page 14.
