I'm thinking about upgrading my 2 door hatchback to something a bit more yak fishing friendly. It works well for solo trips but when fishing with another yak angler it fills up pretty fast. I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else is using to move their plastic around. I'm leaning toward a Subaru Forester or Outback, as I'd like to have the 4wd for the beach but still get 22-25 MPG on the drive out there. Plus I commute about 35 miles a day. I'm planning on buying used and would like to spend less than 10k. Eventually I'd like to get a trailer so I can haul 3 boats, anglers and gear.
Well it only took me about 7 months but I bought the VW's replacement. I followed Craig's suggestion and went with a 2WD, since 99% of my driving doesn't require 4WD and I like the idea of getting about 1-2 MPG. After searching for a LONG time for a Forester, Outback, or Volvo V50, that didn't have a salvage title and 150k for the bargain price of $12,000 I decided to buy my first new car. The winner was a 2014 Mazda CX-5. It's a pretty cool vehicle, way more room than the VW and it actually gets way better gas mileage. It's rated at 26 MPG around town and 35 on the freeway. I've gotten an average of 32 MPG so far. I went with the base, "Sport" model with a 6 speed manual transmission. It got another 4 MPG on the freeway and I like driving a manual anyway. It should tow my kayak trailer okay, but it's certainly not winning any speed or acceleration contests. I need to add a rack and get the hitch installed. Then I'll be ready to cover it in sand and fish slime!

Very cool! Now the real question: is this vehicle for you or do you just get to borrow it? When we got a new vehicle I was informed it would be my wifes as her daily drivet.

Lucky for me the CX-5 is not my wife's style. We recently bought her this S40.

This is how I've been rolling lately

Concluded that the convertible was no place for an infant, so picked up the S15 for a few hundred.

Noah - the real question are: How are the tow hooks on that thing?  And does Langston get to ride in it? And make sure you get one of those collapsible gas tanks and put it in the trunk.

Haha. It's funny you mention that Sherm, one of the first things I asked the sales guy was where are the tow hook locations? :) They actually thread into that round hole you see in the bumper.  ;D

Cool new ride Noah. Classy choice. I've heard good things about that model Mazda.

Awesome! Finally another X owner... :)

Here's my setup, although I hope to move to a trailer soon (your setup is exactly what I'm looking for), so I can through my cargo box back on top (Thule Atlantis 2100) and actually fit everything in with my two kids again.
