Btw folks, is there such a thing as a dedicated style of knife for crabbing?

I don't believe I have ever used a knife crabbing.  Seems all you need is something to cut the line in case of an emergency.

Same here demonick.
I do know of folks who use a knife to pith the crabs, for some reason (?) before cooking.
I like them to be quite lively when they hit the boiling pot.

Thanks, guys. I should'a been more specific. Am asking, Is there a specific knife type you use for cleaning crabs after you haul and sort. Not worried too much about cutting the rope, most of what i'd be involved in is gonna be off a dock /pier/ etc. Have looked at oyster spikes as a possible means of dispatch, but then again, meh  :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

They're just crab. I wouldn't ruin a perfectly good knife on a crab. I don't believe in the whole humane blah blah blah...but hey that's just me

Hey now Dino, I've seen you humanely kill plenty of crabs  :P

The "bash em on a corner of a concrete block" method is pretty humane IMHO. Gets it over with quickly

I too don't really see the point of a dedicated crabbing knife. A safety knife to cut lines makes lots of sense though

You're definitely overthinking it Rich.  The crab face to the corner of a concrete block method is pretty much, perfect, and I bet it actually does kill them quicker than any knife could.

I just grab all their legs on either side and bang the bottom side of the center of their body on the edge of something.  Thus ripping their legs and body meat out.  Shake (or pull) the gills off and they are ready to cook.  I can't imagine anything faster or more humane then that... unless it is to allow them to return the the free range of the water.

It's not doo-doo.  It's hemolymph, a copper-based blood.  Same stuff you get when you suck the heads of a mudbug.

If you are a big guts eater you should know where and when your crabs were caught. "Red Tides" can elevate domoic acid to unsafe levels in the guts, but the meat is still safe.

Don't forget the hepatopancreas, the yellow goo, where toxins (algal and man made) can accumulate as Ling Banger said.
