Plant spills sewage into Willamette for 45 minutes
Tuesday, March 11, 2008

An unfortunate Canada goose knocked out power to a sewage treatment plant Saturday, causing about 93,750 gallons of raw sewage to spill into the Willamette River near Milwaukie.

The errant bird flew into a power pole Saturday evening, knocking off the power and killing the bird. Power to a pump station at the Oak Lodge Sanitary District wastewater treatment plant went down at 7:04 p.m., plant manager J. Michael Read said.

Backup power didn't kick in because of a computer glitch related to the pump station losing only some of its electricity. As a result, raw sewage flowed into the river from 7:10 to 7:55 p.m.

A computer system detected the outage and alerted sewer officials. With help from Portland General Electric, the electricity went back on.

The state Department of Environmental Quality, which was notified of the spill, could fine the sanitary district about $15,000 for a permit violation, Read said.

Workers on Sunday morning posted warning signs about the sewage spill at the nearby River Villa Park in Oak Grove.

Officials on Monday were trying to understand and fix the glitch.

The treatment plant, built in the 1960s, has an obsolete electrical system that the sanitary district likely will update within the next couple years, Read said.

"It's an old plant, and it needs some love and investment," he said. "We're sorry this happened."

They're all dark meat and considering where it landed, it's probably basking in a savory brown gravy...
