ODFW web page has a mention of ninety some odd rainbow brood stockers being released into Vernonia pond. Happened on Monday. Twenty plus inches and chubby. I am a little intrigued. Haven't been out that way in some time, though. What is the pond like this time of year? Small, right? Maybe too small to warrant a kayak? I have tomorrow off, but need to spend the majority of the day getting my eyeballs poked at. Thinking of going for a paddle before hand. Maybe fish. Maybe not. Hydrotherapy sounds good, though. Is VP worth checking out? If so, is there a magic technique involved in catching said farm animals? Should I put down the barley wine and plan on getting up at 4am? Will I be bad touched by a fellow who disapproves of city folk paddling strange craft and speaking in devil tongues?

I've only driven past but it seemed like a "big" pond with plenty of room. I've seen a couple caught off power bait off the bottom but the usual stocker trout technics should work.

I've fished Vernonia once before from the bank, didn't catch anything. It's large enough for a kayak / SUP / ?, but you'd have to do laps if you're looking for any type of physical exercise. Launching should be easy since you can pull right up to a grassy embankment.
The scenery there isn't much to speak about since it is so urban. The good thing is that most other fishers at the location won't speak English so if you deliver your "devil tongues" with a smile, they may not know the difference.

It might not be ideal, but it'll be more fun than not going at all.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Thanks, gents. Eyeballs are well dilated and I cannot type. Didn't go out but paddled the tualatin floodplane instead. Good times, though.

Vernonia Pond Report.

I spent four hours up at Vernonia Pond yesterday. The pond is relatively small, 2 miles around by trail. The deepest area mapped was 7 feet with an average depth of 4 ft. Twest side is choked with lily pads and submerged logs and structures. The rest of the lake is fishable. With light tackle or flies. (Lots of weeds on the bottom.)

The brooders were there. Most of them seemed to be in shock and were skimming the surface. I could of reached down and scooped up several as I drifted by. I am guessing that there is an adjustment period that has to happen before they start biting. If you do go, fish the southern end close to the inlet pump. Most of the big ones were gathered in this area.

By the way, I really like the green Outback. On the way home I put in at Scappoose bay. I floated up to the ducks without any camo. Hunting anyone?

I heard they are all gone.  You guys should probably save the gas and stay away.  I may head there Tuesday to confirm.
