Cabela's all metal salt strikers are on sale.  Normally $79 are now $29.  That's the price of a standard ugly stick.

Lee you're a lifesaver I was just shopping for a saltwater spinning reel yesterday.
Any specific model from this series you would recommend for lings? I'm trying to pair it with that ugly stick jigging rod you sold me last year.

They must be coming out with a new model, because both the metal and graphite versions are on sale and they dropped $10 in price since yesterday.

The 40 or 50 is plenty to handle rockfish, greenling and smaller lings.  Linglady had me order two of the 70s cuz she likes the big reels.  the 70s and 80s can handle big lings.

Edit:  If you have to pick between the two for money reasons, go big.  A big reel can handle big fish and small fish.  The same is not so true with a small reel, and bottom fishing isn't usually a finess type of fishing.   >:D

I was thinning the SSM70A based on the line capacity and line weights. Too small for lings?

Not at all, Linglady catches big lings with her 65 (the graphite version) all the time.  Well actually she's catching them with my old 65, that used to be attached to the rod I sold you.  Hers locked up from improper rinsing, and I just got around to fixing it last weekend.

The 50 is plenty for almost all of our fishing. I personally am of the mind frame that smaller is better when it comes to rods and reels. I run 2000 and 4000 shimano reels and have never felt under gunned when catching targeted species. 200 yards of 40# braid is plenty for kayak fishing.

They are all the same price, so it boils down to preference.  I ordered 50s for myself, but I intend to use them as a general purpose on a medium weight ugly stick.  I like being able to cast and retrieve for rockfish instead of just bouncing off the bottom.  Linglady likes big reels, so she's gonna have 70s.

For the heavier stuff I've grown to love my levelwind.  By heavier stuff I mean jigs 8 oz or bigger.

I personally only own small and medium spinning reels. I was looking for one with a little more line capacity. I ended up ordering own of the 70s.
I'm thankful that you posted this because I have been looking for a while for a decent larger saltwater spinning reel and this one seems to be pretty good from the reviews.
