I recently joined this forum as I am researching the logistics of a trip next summer to Vancouver Island. My dad and I were on a recent MX kayak fishing trip and were discussing going back to Alaska. I like to drive to my adventure destinations so I can bring all the gear needed and driving to Alaska is likely another 10 years away. This was the 14 hour drive to San Carlos, Sonora MX.

My Dad and I have fished and hunted together for over 40 years. We have a  drive-down trip to Baja planned in the Spring.

I moved to San Diego from the midwest ND/Minnesota and have lived in CA for 25 years. The monicker "Iceman" stems from owning an ice company for 17 years. I sold that and bought a kayak store. I now live in Huntington Beach and own and operate OEX Sunset Beach www.oexsunsetbeach.com

Fishing has always been a passion and discovering and exploring new waters is higher on my list than catching trophy fish, although BIG fish are a close second.. Hopefully I can acquire some local knowledge and allow me to pick your brains a bit about venturing north.........I don't plan on retiring in California!

I am not on here to sell you guys anything and am happy to help in any way I can in return.

I am looking to rent a house in Sooke and fish the surrounding area last week in August. wonder what to expect, anything off limits then?

Welcome, Iceman! If you're driving to Vancouver Island spend a few days in the American Vancouver (WA) and fish with us around Portland.

Hey Andy,

Nice to see you here.  How long of a trip you got planned.  That may help with some of the suggestions.

2013 is a pink year ... do you want to focus on salmon or bottom fish?

Canada is great .... but AK is magical!

That sounds like a fun trip! If you had the time it would be a blast to work your way up 101 and fish along the way. Lots of us Portland guys would be happy to show you some spots in and around the PDX area. There are some great coastal spots in Depoe bay and pacific city OR, about two hours from here. Pus good sturgeon fishing within the city limits.

What's up Andy?!  This is Jeff, I used to work with Brian at the OEX in Point Loma when it was still there.  Then I worked for the whole Anglers' Yak Shack thing making the kayatanks before moving up to Oregon.  Good to see you on NWKA!

Let us know when you're coming though Oregon.  As Noah said, there's plenty of us that would be happy to show you around and get you into some fish.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am thinking 2 LONG days driving up, then fishing 4-5 days before the long drive home. I plan to pick up my Dad and brothers in Seattle. There may be some fly fishermen in the bunch. I'd like the variety of it all. I love jigging, don't want to troll all day. We are looking at last week of August. Not looking to fill our coolers, want to eat some fresh!

Hey Andy, welcome. Great timing for the trip. You'll be able to jig for all the bottom fish, lings, pacific halibut, chinook salmon, and cast to jumping pinks. I'm in Seattle so if you want to fish this area feel free to holler.

Andy, It's nice running into you on NWKA. This PNW crowd is obviously a classier  group than you find in and around Sunset Beach in southern Cal. These guys are great and I get to meet more of them each time I'm hanging out with my grandsons, in Portland. Hands down this is my favorite kayak fishing forum. I'll visit you in the shop next week. I'm almost done tricking out the Outback.

I lived in Fargo for 6 years.  Go Bison!  I grew up in a dinky town on the Canadian border surrounded by missile silos.

Late summer ... think about going to Moutcha on Vancouver Island.  They have a tourney in late Aug or early Sept.  Lots of everything to fish for along the way.
