By the time this gets figured out its going to look like some recent legislation proposed by Diane Fiendstein.
I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

Next think we are going to have to define fishing from a kayak- if you get assistance in landing a fish, does it qualify for aoty?

Iirc - you have to land a fish solo. I think that means if your buddy nets your fish for you it doesn't count.

As rev indicates, it doesn't count.  That's clearly covered in rule #1 on the AOTY page.

If it was up to Feinstein, she's probably ban kayak fishing.   >:(

I hate using wikipedia as a source but the first paragraph sounds pretty good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayaking

Hah!  I was just thinking pretty much exactly the same thing ... seated position with legs extended out front using a double bladed paddle or leg driven propulsion system (Mirage drive or others).

Of course that doesn't rule out these.

If you wanted to roll out of PC in one of those more power to you!  :)

In all seriousness though, I think the current SUPs, sinks, SOT, and canoes are all OK for AOTY. None of them appear to offer a significant advantage over one another. Fishing in a tandem can be nice, but also be a pain. Trolling for salmon is great because one person sits back and relaxes, but bass fishing isn't. Getting snagged up on rocks with two people means both people have to quit while you get un-stuck. Limiting tandems to solo operator fishing excursions works for me.

Rafts, paddle boats, drift boats, row boats, etc. are fairly easy to see that they are not "kayaks" and don't even come close to a description of what a kayak could or should be.
All fishermen are liars except you and me
(and sometimes I wonder about you).

AOTY kayak in my view.

Is an enclosed single wide seated craft that can accept a paddle skirt.

or

Is an open topped single wide seated craft with scupper holes.

Specifics:
Human powered only.
Single hull.
Hull is no wider than 40".

I'm sure someone could find a craft that fits this criteria, yet isn't something we normally would see among the users here.

Again, this is just my view on it.

Not to be nit picky, but if I went out fishing in my kayak and threw one of my young children on with me to get them out on the water, does that mean any fish caught would not count since there is more than one person aboard?  If that is the case, does that mean the Youth Division of the AOTY will require them to operate their own kayak?

I am in favor of canoes, kayaks (peddle and paddle), canoe/kayak hybrids, pirogues, and SUPs in the AOTY. I think the 42 inch width is a good rule.  I am biased though because I have all the above but the SUP.  Until I get the plans and spare time for this bad boy:
