... I bet a guy that grows up on the big island is probably a pretty decent swimmer.
Just sayin....

Those guys on Big Island are incredible. The closest I got to ahi magic was at Da Poke Shack -- where the poke was fantastic.

While I was there I watched the surf reports every day after 12/23, and the surf was just pounding. Wind waves and swells that exceed what Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound displays from April through October. Clearly outside my competency, I never ventured out of the most protected coves.  Nor did I venture out without a PFD -- though usually was the only one visible wearing one.  Got battered in the surf zone, practicing launches and landings and then self-rescues in the deep water. That was pretty informative...

Great vid... I wonder how that kage and gaff combo would work on a monster halibut?

That's what we hoped to be doing last Saturday. We were in Kihei and fished with localfishingknowledge.

My wife got this nice omilu on light tackle while we were trying to jig for the opelu for bait. It was extremely rough and I couldn't finish the trip due to seasickness. It was a tragedy since I was really hoping for a pelagic.

I made mine. pretty easy wood shovel, rake, pitch fork handle. cut to a length you are comfortable with.

A piece of all thread rod 1/4" - 1/2".(hardware store) You want the all thread for the threads they act as barbs. grind one end to a sharp point with grinder. you can grind point after rod is in handle.

Drill a hole in the end of handle same size or 1/16" less then hammer in. drill at least 4-6" in..

Then go fishing

You would be surprised as to how many people from Hawaii cant swim.

Ya ... I'm going to second the thought that pfd's aren't really necessary there.

Yep I have never worn a PFD until I started fishing here.  I always had a surfboard/boogie board leashed to me as my PFD  ;D

OK ... I'll revise my statement

I bet if someone grows up on the big island and spends a lot of time on the water they are pretty good swimmers.

Can anyone tell what reel he was using? It looked like a Shimano TLD-25 to me.
