I do a lot of shopping at Buy.com. I got an email this AM for a Garage Space-Saver Storage Hoist system for kayaks/canoes on sale for $19.99. Just thought someone might be interested.

They have these here in Portland for $8.99 plus you can always find a 20% off Harbor Freight coupon.  There are no big black straps, but I don't think that $19.99 one comes with them either.  http://www.harborfreight.com/bicycle-lift-95803.html

Craig,
That's a nice deal on the Harbor Freight Hoist. The main difference is in rated capacity. The Harbor Freight has a rated capacity of 44 pounds and the Buy.com has a rated capacity of 100 pounds.

I would also check the pulley's.  I purchased a similar one that had plastic pulley's and it is difficult to hoist a 55lb kayak without the cord slipping off the pulley.  Works ok for my lighter pontoon boat but the kayak is another story.

That's a pretty good deal.

I use this type of system to hang my kayak in my garage and it's great.  Really frees up a bunch of space.  I ended up making mine...purchased heavy duty straps at Harbor and I believe I got the pulleys at Harbor also (maybe Ace...can't remember).  At any rate, it came out to be around $30 to $40 in the end.  I'd say mine can handle a quite a bit more that 100lbs, but that's not really necessary.

I use a set of the cheapo's for bikes- i changed out the rope to some heavier parachord type stuff and have no problems at all in over 2 years. and i use a set of straps looped around the boat to hook the hooks into.

I have one just like buy.com with the straps for my 43lb canoe. Works great if you thread the rope through the pulleys correctly, because it has an automatic locking mechanism. It is very easy to hoist up the canoe/kayak one end at a time.

Check out the GarageGator models, hold 125-220 lbs, no muscle power required:

Here's a used one for $80:

I have the 220 lb one, cost about $190 new but I really love it.

Years ago I kind of copied the HF design but in this case,  it was to lift a 24" x 72" shelf.   Intent was to use the shelf to place helmets, gloves, tank bags... on top with a typical large dowel installed below to hang riding jackets and such off coat hangers.   I found the hard way that you need to keep the load somewhat balanced from one end to the other.   If one end is much heavier, in this case the end with all the jackets on hangers,   it is the lighter end that will rise.    Results were 5 helmets coming down at once.   Just my luck that the one I managed to catch was my cheap helmet while my friends VERY expensive Arai helmets took the bounce test.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Huh! I didn't see that. The two I bought there a couple years ago were rated for 100 pounds.  Must be the rope.  I have seen many different ones for sale (Costco...etc. and they all looked the same, but the rope sometimes looked different.  For me it doesn't matter, I only hang my cedar strip kayaks in the garage and none weighs more than 35 pounds.  I have never had a rope slip off of a pully, either.

Finally got the Garage Gator installed.  I plan on immediately replacing those 1" wide straps with either wider straps or flat boards or PVC protected with pool noodle.
Now I can lower right into the bed of my truck.  This is the 225 pound model and my ceiling is 15'.
Nice... clean...... and electric.

Just beware of the kits with the wide straps equipped with the cheap plastic clips.  They will break. DAHIK.  I recommend voiding out the clips and use a one piece strap made to the length you need.
