Z - I'm no expert but I've had success using the sink-wait.wait.wait-strip-sink-wait.wait.wait etc etc method with a long tippet and a floating line.  It's kind of like bobber fishing with flies as you see the take by the motion in your line  ::)
Another method I've had really good success with during surface bites is to lay a small chrominid out just below the surface on a light tippet w/ floating line and "jiggle" it every couple of seconds.

Personally, I'd rather ply small streams with nymphs but it can be fun when the fish cooperate.

Maybe I'm the odd duck out here, but I don't like bare flies on Hagg until the water clears up. Hagg lake isn't very clear even on good days and with the poor visibility you really have to luck out and put the fly right on the fish's nose. If the water is like it is now, I have much better luck with an attractor(like Ford Fenders or Lake Trolls). I troll flies behind them sometimes, but I really think you need the flash to get the fish's attention or draw them in when the visibility is low. Later in the season when it clears up you can get rid of the attractors. Bare flies(or lures) become more effective then. Just my humble opinion...  :)

I do think that flies on the surface when the trout are feeding in large numbers are effective though, even when the visibility isn't optimal.

I'd agree.  And I'd add that late in the summer when the lake gets really warm, I like to troll those same attractor and bait rigs deep in the middle of the lake.  There are some fat holdovers hanging out down there.

Z-

Come over here after the lakes open, in late April/May and I'll show you how. There's lots of ways, depending upon the season and location.
