I gotta give this guy props for managing to right his PA 12 not once, but twice. The wave that took him out wasn't very big at all, I guess it caught him at just the right angle.

After my recent huli a few weeks ago I sympathize with this guy :)

YARDSALE!

Looks like his old man got his cooler back, but some beach combers are going to get a Hobie paddle and few other goodies.

This video perfectly illustrates one of the main reasons I sold my pa12.  It's an simply awesome flat water (rivers/bays) boat but it's sluggish steering lack of keel and high center of gravity is a serious weakness offshore (in poor conditions) particularly in conditions shown in the video with following wind wave/swells.  Watch his left hand on the rudder right before he flips, he's got it pinned and pedaling hard trying to get the yak to turn perpendicular to the waves but its not responding. He's caught sideways and goes over.

In this case, the rudder hard over probably made it worse too, as it would have been face to the wave.

[armchair quarterback]  In those conditions, he should have had his paddle out in addition to the drive.  For added boat control ... [/armchair quarterback]

True.. You can see the last two wind waves catch his stern and push it sideways, rudder surely added extra under water drag.   But, if he had been able to get more of the boat turned quicker I think he would have stayed upright.  Total armchair captain on my part but based on my time at the helm of my pa12 I came to the conclusion that the Aventure will be my offshore platform.

Curious what people think the best offshore Hobie platform is.  I have an outback and it seems to handle okay in my limited experience; but it's not a boat meant for paddling; I learned that after I lost my drive a while back.  Feels large and doesn't track well without the rudder.

That was pretty painful to watch.  I have found two things the PA12 is not good with: wind and steering.  This amount of wind would have made maneuvering a nightmare.  The cooler on the back also raised his center of gravity.  I have found that if the rudder isn't responding, as was his case, you have to simply give in and make a loop around in the other direction.  In his case, this would have meant turning down the wave instead of trying to turn up it.  He also wasn't leaning into the waves at all, which might have kept him from being pushed over.  There's my armchair QB analysis.

Absolutely love my Revo13 while offshore.  It's plenty quick, tracks well, turning radius is good, paddles very well if the drive is inoperable, and I've taken it through some pretty gnarly wind waves and never felt like it would buck me off.

hey wait a minute, I bought that PA12...but not as an offshore boat, I do however need it to handle some wind chop and boat wakes in the Siuslaw tidewater however...I was wondering why he didn't have his paddle in hand as conditions got worse...seat in low position?

also seems that he might have wanted to secure stuff to the boat a little better.....

If you're using it in the tidewater, you won't have to worry about seeing wind waves like those.  If you do, you really shouldn't be on the water anyway.  I was trying to see if he had his seat down or up but couldn't tell.  Judging by his posture I would say it was in the low position.  It's really easy to not have everything stowed on the PA12 since there's so much room to throw your crap while you're fishing.   ::)

I was just checked his comments on youtube and he said the seat was in High position before the first capsize....

That would do it for sure.  I've found that the lower position is by far the more comfortable position while on the ocean.  I tried it out in the upper position and felt like I was way too tipsy.

Personally I don't like the current direction of barge like boats. Why don't we just make a plastic john boat with scuppers and put a 10 horse on the back.
The high center of gravity of the elevated seat makes boats really unsettled in sloppy conditions.

In the Hobbie realm I am with PP and love the adventure, though I believe the Revo is pretty good for most people.
In the paddle realm I think the OK Trident and Prowler 13s are pretty hard to beat. I have had that boat out in way worse conditions and never huli'ed

Rodger, for what you want to do you will love the PA12. It will work fine in the ocean on those calm days too.

The Revo or the Adventure would be my vote for best offshore Hobie platform, with my preferance being the Addy. I'm not a fan of the Outbacks as the tend to pitch and wallow in rough ocean conditions instead of slicing though them.
