So I'm planning on picking up my 1st Hobie soon but I had some questions.  In looking into buying the new yak I ran across a shop that has some older model (2009-2010) brand new boats that are reduced.  My questions are how do these older models differ?  I know some people have had issues with where the mirage drive mounts and leaks, is this prior to these models or have they been fixed?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

As far as I know, 2012 changes were:
  • reinforced scuppers
  • secondary alignment pins in the mirage drive
  • slight color change on the red / hibiscus.
  • The Revo 13 also got a  comfy handle upgrade.

I don't know of any 2013 updates, and some of the above occurred mid-year last year too.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Just thought I would share:

I have a 2011 Outback, but recently purchased a new drive.  I ended up with the new version of the drive that has the secondary alignment pins Skidplate mentioned; it fits my outback fine.  I'm just glad that the changes haven't effected how the drive fits...something that may be relevant if you're worried about replacement parts for the older models.

I really like those alignment pins; the drive drops in easier and seems more stable while mounted.

If you're looking at Adventure Islands, the newer models have a larger, sturdier rudder but Hobie has sent out the new ones as an upgrade--check to see if the shop has put them on--if not--get them to do it.

One of the best upgrades was a much improved seat mounting system.

The newer seat mounting system is great. Also the alignment pins on the newer drive can be removed to use in an older Hobie. These are all fairly small but great imrpovements. A new Hobie also comes with a warranty, that is worth considering as well.

The 2009-2010 models should be fine.  One thing to check is that the kayak has a V2 drive and the clip and go piece for attaching the drive.

I would definitely stick with the V2 Mirage drive.  They are easier to insert and remove.  The new seat attachments are nice as well but not a deal breaker for me.

Which models are you interested in??

If your local shop doesn't have what you are looking for we have some 2012 demos that need new homes.
