09/30 Willamette fishing in the evening...

Going to launch out of Clackamette park this evening... I think I'll make it there around 4:30, hope to be all geared up and on the water around 4:45... Anyone want to join me in trying to get some coho on their journey to the Clackamas?

Have yet to catch anything larger than a trout from my yak, would love some company and tips!

troll orange wiggle warts, fast..

Thanks for the tip!  Lord knows I could use them... I just looked up those wiggle warts and I did just pick up some almost exactly like that (they were suggested at fisherman's marine supply for me).  I was told to tie my line directly to the lure and troll fast.

Last time, I did just that, I probably went too fast, I did not attach any weight, I let out a whole bunch of line (80 feet or so). Since I tied directly to the lure and didn't have leader or a swivel i had a hell of a problem with line twist.  It twisted really bad to the point it was just basically knots, couldn;t straighten the line out for the life of me, and had to cut at least 20-30 feet off.  Not sure what I did wrong.

Should I be paddling so I can see my pole vibrating?  If I go real fast it won't vibrate at all (proally just twisting heh)...

Hmmm.. if you had issues with a wiggle wart twisting that probably means it wasn't tuned in properly.   In general, a plug like a wiggle wart should cause your pole to vibrate a bit.  It's a good idea to test your lure to see if it's 'tuned in' or 'tracking true' before tossing it out behind you.  Simply let it run next to your boat and make sure it has a nice even wobble back and forth.  If it veers to one side or the other or goes into a spiral then you need to tune it.

So do you agree to run the line directly to the lure, and if it's tuned correctly I should be good to go?

A well tuned plug tide directly to the line shouldn't twist.  It should just wobble back and forth.

Is it necessary to always tune the wigglers out of the box? 

I thought they were tracking straight, guess not. 

Fished plenty of colors, orange, pink, green & orange mix, dark green...  Had problems with line twist again at the end.  Saw tons of fish jump, close too.   At the end when it was starting to get dark, the fish were rolling like crazy. 


I'm not sure if I'm trolling at the right speed.  Not sure if a fast troll is paddling fast or just faster than one every couple seconds...

I was working the same areas I saw the other boats were, talked to one that caught a nice 'ho.  They were using a Wiggle Wart Micahel Jackson color.  I lost that one right away, first time with a WW.  Apparently the eyehook isn't always closed on them.w I know i tested my knot, all the sudden my line went slack and the lure was gone.  Started looking at them all closer, couple of them had small gaps wide enough for the line to slip through, they bend closed easy enough with pliers though.  Anyways, they were using a MJ WW and 5' of leader to a swivel.  I tried the leader and swivel in desperation, that's when the line twist occurred today.

I think I had a bite at the end today as it was getting dark and they were rolling like crazy.  But seemed to get off right away, when I reeled the line in is when I noticed the line twist and my lure was hooked around itself, heh.

Hmm sounds promising.  I'm curious about the Micheal Jackson color.  It's not an official name as far as I can tell looking on the Storm Lure site.

I don't have one of these black/glitter ones, but I have  wiggle warts and Brad's wigglers in copper/red/orange.  Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow after work.

Bsteve's are you going to fish the Willy?  If so where you launching from? I've been doing Clackamette park, but I think maybe next time Meldrum bar park might be better.  That way your already downstream a bit from the mouth and can work up it, saw lots more fish jumping by the bar than I have closer to the mouth.

Thanks for the info.  I'm not sure where I'm launching tonight, I was hoping to figure that out today.  I haven't actually ever been down that way but I've heard stories of cars getting broken in to.  Any idea whether Clackamette Park or Meldrum Bar might be safer?

Anyone else up for a fishing trip tonight?

I am not sure, Clackamette park is new to me, and I haven't ever been to Meldrum bar, just see it when I paddle past.  Clackamette is fairly well lit in the parking lot near the boat ramp, but they also have a skate park there.. hmm  I do see police patrol Clackamette...

Ya I've been reading lately about break-ins when people are fishing.  I don't leave much out in site in the car, but haven't had a problem so far, knock on wood.

I'm trying my best to go out again toniht and give it another shot.

Hmm... Fishermen's Marine is just the other side of McLoughlin Blvd from Clackamette Park and I could easily pick up a  couple 'Micheal Jackson' Wiggle Warts to try, and maybe a few blue fox spinners, and I need a new.. uh oh this could be bad.

Anyway, I think I may give it a shot tonight after work.

Yep that's part of the incentive for me to get out there.  That and to test out the my new Trident 13 and the paddle I won at Pac City.  Oh.. and I really need a salmon.
