Big LING prize!
« on: September 10, 2010, 07:42:24 pm »
Driving to the coast tonight I had an idea.. ::)

Last year CBY generously put up one of his handmade, turned Myrtle wood fish bonkers up as a prize for the largest ling on a weekend when lots of folks where hitting PC and Sunset bay.  I will mail this same fish bonker (that has been hanging in a place of honor in my shop ;D) to who ever slays the largest ling this weekend (9/11-9/12 Oregon/Washington).  I was thinking it could be a moving "trophy".  Each angler that earns the "trophy" would sign/date it and then, on their NWKA honor, offer it up again on another weekend when a number of us will be fishing up and down the coast. Good idea?? or..

So let see those big lings!  AOTY style photo measurement required.

Will you cut in a guy in far NorCal?   ;D

I like the idea alot, pp.  Good luck to you guys.   :)
The Outdoors is a place where we can discover ourselves, share with others, appreciate Nature, and grow into better people.  Or...  we can focus on killing, hoard the good spots and hot bites, take Nature for granted and abuse it, and allow our ego's to dominate us.  Some will fall squarely at the extremes of my descriptions, and nearly all of us have experienced aspects of either extreme.  For me, it's about recognizing where I am in regard to that spectrum and making necessary adjustments.

I caught one today, but it was the "hotdog" variety - small and skinny.  I'll give it a go again tomorrow.

Today was bitter sweet.  I got my rockfish and 2 lings around 25"  But,  I had an exciting day of big fish hooked but not landed.  Big fish number one was a decent sized hailbut I brought to color but lost as it sounded once it saw the yak, no big loss as the season is closed but still got the heart pounding!  Big fish 2, 3 & 4 were monster lings,  I happened to catch a greenling about 8 inches long and sent him back down, Not less then ten minutes into the drift my rod pulls over like I was snagged and the yak starts to turn sideways with it.  Fish on! a big, heavy, powerful fish that I slowly work to the surface but the hitchhiker lets go before I get a chance to see it.  Back down goes mister greenling and 2 more times (and I'm sure totally different fish) I "hook up" with mister monster hitchhiker and try to finesse some of the heaviest hardest pulling ling action I have seen to the surface.  No dice.  Maybe tomorrow 8)
