Today I started work on a kayak trailer. It is a Harbor Freight utility trailer that my parents weren't using anymore. Gonna finish stiffening it up tomorrow, check the wiring, and probably paint it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to add a locked removable or hinged top? I would like to be able to lock up a cooler or two in there while I'm out fishing. For the time being, I will  just put a net on it to keep my gear from flying out on the freeway. I attached before and after photos.

Looking at the photos, I'm wondering how you'd be able to open a top the way it's set up to carry kayaks.  There's not much space between the tops of your sidewalls and the bars, and with side walls that tall, I'd think that reaching inside is going to be a chore.

There's a site that discusses home-built trailers - mainly camping trailers - that might give you some ideas, and INSAYN built one heck of a trailer.  Mojo Jojo does a lot of trailer fabrication, and there are other trailer build reports if you'll do a search.

Here's one that's similar to yours: http://northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=18990.0

And here's the Tventuring site: https://tventuring.com/trailerforum/

Mount a roll up security door on the top. :-)

Thanks, Barb
Much appreciated.

I have some upgrades in the planning that will enhance the camping aspect of the trailer, making overall setup, tear down and the cooking area setup even faster!

Thanks for the feedback! I might need to redesign later. I really like smokey anglers and insayn's designs, and may need to incorporate some of their ideas.  I think my current design will work for now. Painted it yesterday, and i put a few more coats after this pic was taken. I'll be testing it next week after I get back from Omak Lake.
