A nice beach campout spot on Vancouver Island that we like to frequent.  Here's a couple past adventures.  One of my all time favorite trips.

Wow, I like yer Sombrio way better! That is a fat Cabezon!! .  Nice fish all. I can't wait until Ocean calms down a bit so i can go fishin out of Sunset for some Lings.

I also noticed that NWKA seemed to be born right about that time.

2nd the WOW factor.. and just doing a rough estimate on cost, that's waaay reasonable, think i totaled it out to something like 330 US even with a mild inflation adjustment, not including the  heck even i could do it..

so, the thigh straps do what,again?? help you stabilize and guide?
 

It totals out much less if you carpool with one other.  In one of those threads I posted the following:

Ferry was ~$110 round trip for 2.  Actual road miles was in the neighborhood of 300 miles (a tank of gas) round trip from Seattle.  Canadian 3 day license was ~$20.  Camping was CA$5 per night.

So with 2 sharing, it's $55 each for ferry, let's be generous and say $40 each for gas, $20 for license, and say $5 each for camping.  That's only $120.  Plus food, but you got to eat anyway, so I don't count that.  Of course there are extra servings of beer one much ccount for.

Anyway ... when we going?  I miss Sombrio.

hmmmm...even still for under $500 for, what? 3-4 days? it's a steal. but,..thinking we need to move this to a more general thread or over to an event planning thread of some type, and get back to the thigh straps format.. which brings back the question... why thigh straps??

Hey Allen boy Am I in for Sombrio this summer, much  more ready than the first time.  Let me know if you want to car pool.  I have ready decked out the van for trips.

Richard, to answer your question, yes, thigh straps do help with control of the boat. The boat is hard to control when your not still in it.

I've heard of guys rolling SOTs, with straps, even thought they are much wider than SIKs.

Very looking forward to Sombrio. And yes, I will be bringing my surfboards.

Right on.  We will DEFINITELY need to visit Sombrio for a long weekend some time this summer.  Try to make it either during the halibut season or some time after July 1.

Sombrio is NOT normally a beach launch where you'd need the assistance of thigh straps, but there are spots along the beach where breakers nearly always can be found forming and a kayaker could use those isolated spots to practice surf launch and landing.

ok, i think i've got myself turned around here.. where is Sombrio in relation to Moutcha Bay, again??

From Victoria, follow the Strait of Juan de Fuca towards Port Renfrew.  If you hit Port Renfrew, you went too far.

I haven't driven to Sombrio, just Moutcha Bay. But I have the idea that it is only a couple of hours from Victoria, as opposed to the 7 or so to Moutcha. I think it's also paved all the way!
