I stick with the Oregon based dealers.  Save you a couple hundred in sales taxes.

Oh yeah - good point. :) I forget that most of the world pays sales tax... Oregon, born and bred! (Spent 4 long, boring years in Maryland, but found my way back here soon enough.)

I think a lot of the places will let you do an online purchase to avoid the sales tax but still pick it up in person; at least I've had that experience with some other big-ticket items. But at any rate, it'd be a lot of gas unless it's a smokin' deal.

I may be wrong on this but I think you get an exemption from Washington sales tax as an Oregon resident.

Not all retailers will play along with that.  Be worth trying if you were otherwise committed to buying up here though.  But even absent the sales tax it's still a long ass drive to come up here for a yak when NA, Kayak Shed, ODP, etc have them too.

Q:  Why can an Oregon resident purchase clothing in a Washington store, present some identification, and not have to pay sales tax?

A:  RCW 82.08.0273, provides an exemption from the retail sales tax to certain nonresidents of Washington for purchases of tangible personal property, digital goods, and digital codes, for use outside this state. This statutory exemption is available only to residents of states other than Washington, US possessions, or Canadian territories or provinces that do not impose or have imposed on their behalf, a generally applicable retail sales tax, use tax, value added tax, gross receipts tax on retailing activities, or similar generally applicable tax of 3% or more. Qualifying nonresident buyers must present picture identification noting their out-of-state address to the seller at the time of purchase.

Currently, residents of the following jurisdictions qualify for this exemption:

Alaska
Colorado
Delaware
Montana
New Hampshire
Oregon
American Samoa
Alberta
Northwest Territories
Nunavut
Yukon Territory

Purchases of meals, hotel rooms, laundry services, or other services or products the nonresident uses while in Washington do not qualify for the exemption.

In this case you will end up with shipping costs which are comparable to WA sales tax.

Hey fwiw I appreciate the comments. Obviously I'm going to look closer to home first (come on, I'm not that dumb  :P), I'm just trying to approach the search with an open mind and I know there's a lot of Seattle people on here, so I appreciate the thoughts regarding the shops up there. My wife would be pretty far from complaining if buying the new kayak involved a side trip to Ray's Boathouse or clam chowder at the market. Portland's home, but we enjoy Seattle too.

Thanks again. Due to work and kid constraints I didn't get any calling done today. Tomorrow!

One last post before I put this thread to bed: After calling around and talking to people I settled on the Kayak Shed in Hood River. Langston there is taking good care of me, and I'm really happy to be doing business with them.

Next adventure was really nice and helpful too, just not quite as good of a deal.

Thanks to everyone for your tips.

Langston is a nice enough guy, if you're into that.
If you wanted a really good deal, you could have told him you're a single college girl looking for a yak and a boyfriend. (hence the two-seater) I can almost guarantee that the price point would have been much less important... until you show up in short shorts, halter top, and facial hair. But depending on the day, Langston might be OK with that too.

Ha, ha, ha. I'm joking. Mostly. Kayak Shed is a good shop and Langston is a good guy and I've got nothing but great things to say about both of them.  ;)
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.
