Looking for the post for the scotty lake troller downriggers.

Anyone know if they sell those separately anywhere?

I bought the downriggers used off of craigslist and they had the clamp on brackets.  Which worked great for trying it out and seeing where I wanted it.  Since I am re-rigging a new boat, I am going to make it a little nicer than the redneck version I had last time so I am looking for the post.

Any ideas?  If you have two you are not using, I am interested!

Scotty is small company that thrives on customer satisfaction.  They're really easy to work with and have always gone the extra mile to meet my needs.  Here's a link to their contacts page.  I'm sure that they'll be able to either direct you to a local retailer or sell you one directly.

since I got rid of my milkcrate I need to figure out a new way to mount my cannon DR.  I'll have to look at the scotty site to see if they have something for me as well.

In the bracket-mounted Scotty Laketroller, the bolt runs through the full length of the post.  So in addition to buying the post, you'd need to buy a longer bolt.  You may be able to buy a Scotty rod holder extender or some other inexpensive accessory, saw the post off it, and bolt it to the bottom of your clamp-mounted Laketroller with a hardware store bolt.  When I get home tonight, I'll look at my supply of Scotty equipment and see if that would work.  If you were worried about the bolt getting rusted by salt water, you could look for a stainless steel bolt, but a stainless bolt would be harder to find and more expensive.

As you may have noticed from my postings, I like do-it-yourself projects.  However, a Laketroller isn't very expensive.  Perhaps the sensible thing to do is to buy a bracket-mounted Laketroller, and advertise the clamp-mounted Laketroller for sale on Craigslist or this forum.

I guess I would be surprised if they don't offer it somewhere, otherwise if you broke yours etc. you would have to replace the entire thing.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I will zap them a note when I get a chance and see if it is sold separately.  If not I may have to investigate plan b.

The post on the bottom of a bracket-mounted Scotty Laketroller has a six-sided hole to hold the head of a bolt stationary.  The posts of rod holder extenders have a round hole, so the head of the bolt won't be flush with the end of the post, and would prevent the post from going all the way in a deck mount or a flush mount.  The posts on fish finder mounts have a bolt inside them, so you could buy a fishfinder mount, take off the post, and bolt it onto the bottom of your Laketroller.  But it would probably make more sense to just buy a bracket-mounted Laketroller.

I wondered if the fish finder mount would work.  The reason I don't want to buy new is the difference between $40 and $160.  I have two riggers to do.  I am slammed with Holy Week (I am a pastor) but will get after it in the next week. The new kayaks should ship next week and arrive 5 days later.  I want to be able to rig and run!  I am missing some good kok fishing!

Thumbs up to Scotty!

I emailed them and got a call the next day. They are selling me a conversion kit (x2) for $10 and change!
What awesome customer service!

So, do you have a scotty mount that you just twist and turn this LakeTroller DR into?   That seems like a really easy DR install.  Could you post a photo of your DR attach point on your kayak.  Thanks so much.  Barb

Bracket-mounted Scotty Laketroller downriggers can be mounted on either a side/deck rod holder mount (Part No. 241) or a flush rod holder mount (Part No. 244).  Since Widgeonmangh hasn’t installed his Scotty Laketroller yet, here’s a picture of a Laketroller mounted in a side/deck mount on my 13” Trident.  This downrigger setup is described in detail in http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11486.0 .

Here’s a Laketroller in a side/deck mount which is bolted into a tray on the gunwale of a Hobie Outback.

Thanks Pmmpete.  Great examples.

My kayaks ship today and should be here in 5 business days (another Sunday of yardwork  :'().  I am going to have all the parts here and ready to go so that when it gets here I can mount everything and get out fishing!

My plan will be  to put it basically right where the fish finder is in this picture facing forward. Fish finder battery will have a home under the deck and fish finder on its own ram mount. The only thing I will not know until I get the boat and the downrigger together is if it will be high enough to reach over the front. I believe it will.  Worst case scenario is  I may have to in some way extend it a couple of inches.

So this

You put a lot of pressure and force on the Laketroller downrigger when cranking up the weight.  The rod holder extender would raise the Laketroller up by 4 inches.  The fit is tight, with little play, but the leverage of the extender will increase the stress on the deck mount. If you don't need the full 4 inches of height, I'd suggest that you raise the downrigger by bolting a block of plastic or wood under the deck mount.  I'd make the block bigger than the deck mount to spread out the stress more to the hull or saddle of your Wavewalker.

A suggestion about the Laketroller, which is braked by a handnut on the bolt which runs through the center of the downrigger:  The only thing which keeps the handnut on its bolt is a little plastic cap which is only held on by friction.  Eventually you're going to lose that plastic cap, and when the cap is gone you risk spinning the handnut off the bolt and losing it in the water.  One thing you can do is to go to a hardware store, buy a spare handnut, and keep it in your fishing supplies.  But a better solution is to replace the plastic cap with a lock nut.  There isn't enough thread on the bolt for a regular size lock nut, but you can buy a "thin pattern" lock nut which is only half as thick as a regular lock nut.  Take off the plastic cap and replace it with the thin pattern lock nut, which will keep the handnut on the bolt more securely than the plastic cap, and will provide you with plenty of space to completely loosen the handnut.

I agree.  That is one of the reasons I am reworking my mount system.  I didn't like the stress it was putting on the front of the boat when I would lift up the weight even though I was spreading it out.

Good thing is I don't think I will need the extender.  Also since I am going to be bolting the rod holder receiver to the saddle I will be putting some significant backing under it.  I even think I will be able to bridge one of the grooves which end up because of the shape etc. being structural.  That with the backing plates should make it solid, especially if I do not have to raise it up at all.

Great idea with the locking nut.  I was thinking about drilling it and putting a pin in it. but the nut would be better.

Looking forward to getting all the pieces together!
