My brother and sister in law both have the Revo sail kits and they love them. They also have the inflatable out riggers for stability. In Oregon and Washington you will need to have them registered with the state marine board though!

Here is the rule:

Certificate of number required. (ORS 830.770)

To operate a sailboat 12' or more in length or any motorboat, an operator must carry a valid signed certificate of number on the boat.

Now here is my question:

Our canoes and kayaks are not considered boats (sailboat is a boat).  Therefore, we have to pay twice as much in invasive species money (every year versus every other year for boaters) so, if they are not considered a boat, how can they be considered a sailboat and have to be registered?  I may have to ask the marine board this question.  Or, just do it and when I fight the ticket I can try and set a legal precedence.  ;)

In Washington, you do not need to register a boat under 16 feet if it has less than a 10 horse motor if it is used in "non-federal waters". The ocean and most rivers are considered federal waters, so you still have to register a kayak with a sail if you plan on sailing it in federal waters. Here's a list of federal waters

I am making a sail and ama/aka kit for my wooden yaks/canoes.  It is removable and can be put on various boats.  If it has to be registered, you can bet the numbers will be placed on the left and right akas ;)
