I have a Scotty flush mount rod holder I would like to mount on the new Outback. Any suggestions on where to position it would be appreciated! My old mount on the Caper was between my legs, but with the Mirage drive, this isn't an option. I do a lot of trolling, so easy access is a must!

Large and round, small and round, or rectangular Scotty flush mount?

Goldendog, I have the rectangular ones and I installed mine in front of the molded holders on my Outback ) one on either side. I angled them as seen in the photo below because there are some cable likes running inside the kayak along there and I wanted to avoid the screws rubbing up against them as much as possible.

The round threaded up from the bottom type. The one with the big lock nut!

RR, I was thinking of putting it either there, or where you have your fish finder mounted. I really don't want to have to reach too far forward.

In front of the molded in rod holder.  I have one on both sides.  I'd pick the side you fish off of.  If I had to start over I'd put in the track system.

Not trying to high jack the post but I just installed some Yak Attack Gear Tracs on my Outback and I'm glad I did! The tracks allow for tons of rigging options. You can pretty much rig up for the type of fishing you're going to do. I will post some pictures of my set up once I figure out how I'm going to mount the FF. I thought about using flush mounts but the tracs are so versatile! I have a 4 inch gear trac that I'm going to install where RR has his flush mount, except mine won't have the angle.

I recommend multiple mounts on your boat for several rod holders.
You'll use all of them.
Flush mounts look clean and are unobtrusive

Where did you install the tracks on your outback?

I installed two pieces as show in the pictures in this thread. I also installed a 4in piece in the little tray area where the rudder up cord sits. I used that to mount my FF. It worked really well while I had that boat.

Goldendog,
I found when salmon trolling having it mounted up by the hips works best for me.  I have the rod on an extender and the rod goes across my body. That way it is elevated enough so it doesn't get in the way of your knees. I found it much easier than having to lunge way forward to grab the rod.  This way I can grab hold of the rod and keep kicking to keep the tension on.  It works as a strike indicator too when you are spacing out.  The rod smacks you in the face when a salmon takes it down if you aren't paying attention.

you can see it in action here: http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=14303.0 just ignore the peddadling due to rudder failure.

Did you put a base plate underneath? I'll be fishing halibut and I'm worried about the strain on the track and boat.

Did you install a baseplate underneath the flush mount? I'm wondering about strain from big fish on the boat

Just finished mounting the Scotty flush mount on my outback. I used the methods described in a video made by polyangler. I ended up mounting it in the gunwhale on the left side. I wanted it to be a little closer than if I would have mounted it forward of the forward rod mount.

Glad to see that worked for you! I've done about a dozen of those between my fleet and friends boats combined. You're boat will get towed under before it pulls out!!
