I think that's a Canary.  I've done a bit of studying since I released my Vermillion last year.  >:(

About half way in I got  spun around and went the rest of the way backwards.  It's probably equally effective with my kayak since I don't have a rudder.  I really don't have a preference, but have only done this once!

Backward is much more effective when the surf is rolling.  When it's barreling, there is no easy way to stay dry.

I've used the backward surf landing a bunch of times now and haven't huli'd yet while doing it.

BTW: Nice Yelloweye shot!  They have the same expressions. Lol!

We haven't had a new Picture of the Month in a while, and that one is pretty sweet.

Canary rockfish
Quote
Bright yellow to orange mottled on a gray background gives body appearance of orange color. Fins orange, 3 orange stripes across head, gray along lateral line. Scales on lower jaw smooth. A schooling fish, common along the OR, WA and British Columbia coasts. High flesh quality makes it a commercially important species.

Paul, your descriptions didn't say which was which.

I'm going with Canary with three stripes on the head and very angular anal fin.
