If your trying to track your kids you can just get the gps tracker that you can use on a car and put it in in their yak

Yes, It is for the kids.  Camping there are many lakes that would put them out of sight. Plus, we all like to return and trace our tracks when using the Garmin. I don't like risking the Garmin when on the water. I'm beginning to think that a GPS fishfinder is the way to go with cheaper VHF radios may be my best option.

Do they have smart phones? Maybe there is a way to use them in a phone "dry bag" and use the phone for that?

If they have smart phones there is an app called "gps kit " after you buy / download it there is a feature called "squawk" which sends a signal via gps satellites signal or no signal showing you where the other is on google maps

I found perfect dry boxes for phones at Walmart. They fit my I-phone perfectly. That was a good call. Thanks.
