Hello, I have zero experience with VHF radios. I know that I want something similar to my Garmin Rino 530hcx. I just want a VHF version of it...
I want a VHF/GPS with on screen mapping. I would hope that it be floating also. Does anybody have anything like this? I have been searching and searching with no luck with handheld on screen mapping.
 Any feedback would appreciated.
Thanks Eric

Eric
have you tried Icom and Standard Horizon websites?
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

HX851 Standard Horizon seems to be the most popular VHF with gps.

Not yet. The HX851 has gps but no map. They claim that you can navigate with it.
I think the issue is battery life when you add gps with true mapping and navigation.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like you gave me some more reading. It is surprising to me that on screen mapping is not more popular.
If anybody has been using these and has picked a favorite let me know why you made that choice. Like I said, I have zero experience with VHF radios.
Thanks

I noticed in the HX850 manual that it mentioned hooking up to an external mapping display. I know nothing about GPS mapping, but is there some small display unit that you could connect with to achieve what you want? Shoot, surely somebody's got to have created a smartphone app for that?

There are Smart Phone apps for that.  Navionics for example.

The reason there isn't a VHF out there that offers this yet, is a lack of market.

Marine electronics are for the most part expensive, and people who want GPS Navigation for a boat, don't want that navigation on a handheld, they want a hard mounted system with more accuracy, features, and a LARGE screen.  Often this works out to combine well with Depthfinders, so you do see those units combined.  This target market also uses high powered VHFs, and you can't get that kind of power in a small hand held unit.

People that use handheld VHFs typically are on smaller, cheaper boats, and don't want to spend the $400 a unit like this would cost.  VHF with GPS already costs near $300, and I'm assuming adding mapping would be another $100.  If you take the route of adding the VHF cost to a good mapping device (like Garmin for example), you're looking at $500 or more.

So lee I checked out that navionics app, it seems pretty cool but there is a $9.99 version and a $14.99 version... Do you know what the difference is ?

$14.99 should be the ocean and lakes, and the $9.99 is just the lakes I think.

Yes, I like it.  But I don't use it on the water anymore as my FF has GPS on it.  I tend to use it pre-launch.

I used to use it out on the water with a waterproof phone case.

I'm very interested in buddy tracking. Is it possible to teather your fish finder and VHF to see your buddy on screen also?

You got a buddy who catches fish but won't share his info with you? Or do you just suspect he has found another buddy?
