I have seen shark hooks fall out ... I have seen harpoons glance off heads ... I've heard of harpoon points pulling out.
Basically anything is possible when trying to land a big halibut from a boat or kayak. I think a gun in a kayak to kill a halibut is a horrible idea! Think of how hard it is to hold your pole and a net or gaff at the same time. Now imagine if your net could kill you or sink your boat if dropped.

I have never seen or heard of a harpoon head pulling out.  I am sure it has happened.  My most recent "harpoon glancing off the head" issue I got lucky and it pretty much killed the halibut.

I have folks here in Alaska all the time tell me all I need is a gun.  And they do love their guns here for halibut.  I do agree with Bill that at least for me, it seems like what Bill describes is more a matter of time than "if".  Lol.  I drive hours to catch a single fish.  I can wait 30 minutes with a huge halibut on a rope to fully die before I deal with it I think.  On a boat, you need to typically limit out 4 or 5 other folks so need a quick dispatch.  I don't see myself ever being in too big of a hurry to deal with a 100 pounder or better!!

Guys on boats have other people to shoot the fish and I've heard stories of guys on the boat hearing a bullet glance off an aluminum hull from someone getting over excited and shooting towards the boat. Hell Howard landed a 186 pounder without a harpoon or a shark hook.

always the clever answer...... love it

so much safer than a pistol.....kinda
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

i've heard of the everclear method before a number of times. a buddy and i tried it out on bluegill after catching about 60 of them for a fish-fry at a friend's cabin. didn't work at all. right into the gills. they actually just got livelier. maybe it doesn't work on all fish?

Sure you didn't mixup your spritzer with their spritzer?   ;)

I read it effects different species in different ways, like you DON'T want to try this method on a Barracuda, it makes them a mean drunk.

Maybe try Rum or Vodka.   :occasion14:

after i towed in my 85lb butt, i worked up a Shark hook gaff.  my neighbor refers to it as a flying gaff, and since i havent gotten anything that big.  any of the butt i have used it on up to 30lbs just act stunned.  i slap them through the head or through the belly and pull them onboard(the boats im on) or i just use it to controll them and run a stringer through.

Mine is part of an axe handle about a foot long end is tapered to corolate to the angle of the hook.  cut a channel in the handle, filled it up with j-b weld, set the hook then electrical tapped the hook on to the handle.  set hard, took a length of line(20f) just crab line and spliced an eye though the hook.  a eye thrown in about 5ft up for a bouy, and a carabener clip on the end to secure to what ever vessel im on.  Ill try and get some pictures if anyones interested.
