my grippers are on a brass swivel and/ or shock cord so if the ling decides to roll I can simply let go and let it calm down in the water.
Yes, useful. Do you have a pic of your gripper rig?
Since my son busted them on our last trip out together I can’t photo it but I can see if any of my fish pics have it in it. They were the plastic lip grippers that already have a little bungee cord that I tied to a larger shock cord, then put a big brass swivel clip on and clip that off on the boat. If I can’t find a pic I’ll see about getting pics of the components that need to be tied. Or INSAYN might chime in with his first. (His idea btw)

Correction, I tied off the other side of the handle on the lip grippers as seen in the picture, what you can’t see is the clip that’s on the handle on the other side as in photo 2

Cool! I like the shock chord idea. Sorry for changing the topic of the thread, but still related to lings. Nice fish!

I lost a nice Ling with a hinged brass clip like that (non swivel).  The ling gator rolled up my shock cord and twisted the clip and it popped free of my kayak.  Lost the fish and my grippers.

I have since moved over to the other kind of brass clip that takes a thumb to pull down to release the clip. Haven't had a problem since.
