Trying to measure a live fish to see if it's legal has always been a challenge. I came up with one answer which has worked very well. I drew out the measurements I needed, such as 26" and 36" for Lingcod, right on my boat in the left leg well. I've attached a picture I took last week of a 27" Ling. I didn't take the shot specifically to show how I marked the boat but you can see a sharpie mark by the tail and you can see the nose just an inch over my 26" line. I should note that while measuring the fish I had it the other way round to keep better control of course.

excellent.  I deal with fish on the bow of my Outback from a kneeling position and 22" is the important lingcod length for me, so I used a sharpie to put lines 22" apart on each side of the bow, with "22" next to them.   I can lay the ling across those lines while it is still in the net and get an undersized one right back into the water.  ;D

I use a tape measure sticker that I stuck to my paddle.  I will admit losing a fish or two while trying to measure them but so far that has only been smaller trout, not salmon or lings.

I use a bamboo stake with electric tape at the legal marks. It's light and I can lay it alongside my net while still in the water. Illegal fish don't need to touch my deck.

I just look at the fish and measure it with my eyes.  :happy8:

I also mark down the legwell of my boat, I have 16 and 22 from the left handle marked with a white paint pen. It's worked great so far!

Ok I’ll try to actually make myself sound a little useful.... don’t get use to it!!!
Lingcod gets eyed first, if its close it gets lip grippers, then onto the hog trough, if I’m keeping it it goes on the big game clip then the hook gets removed... my grippers are on a brass swivel and/ or shock cord so if the ling decides to roll I can simply let go and let it calm down in the water.

Yes, useful. Do you have a pic of your gripper rig?
